We went to the Dr today as DS (3) isn't himself. He has one swollen tonsil, the Dr got a second opinion and decided it was an ear infection (he was complaining of sore ears) and gave him amoxicilin.

Now, it being latish at night I thought I would google "one swollen tonsil" which was a very bad idea as all that comes back is about lymphoma.

Slap me and tell me to never google again and to stop being silly, please...

Highly highly unlikely to be anything but completely benign.

cheesesarnie · 14/05/2009 22:22

I spent most of my childhood with one swollen tonsil (always my right one)

I now have no tonsils & one swollen lymph gland (in my neck on the right)

I'm 41..........

girlandboy · 14/05/2009 22:22

naughty, naughty! You know you shouldn't google medical symptoms.

It will be an ear infection/throat infection. My ds got them all the time when he was little. Actually I think he's grown out of them now, he's not had one for some time.

A couple of days of the Amoxicillin and he'll be fine.

moodlumthehoodlum · 14/05/2009 22:23

Oh lovely MNers thank you.

Feel better now. And suitably slapped.

I am a compulsive googler of medical problems, every ache is disasterous, i'm trying to wean myself off, or i'd never sleep again.

moodlumthehoodlum · 14/05/2009 22:25

I found all sorts of sites specifically set up for panicky googlers of medical symptoms. Its like a whole hobby for people

i think we all do it, i know i do and its very very very bad, your baby is fine and will be right as rain in a couple of days

Tamarto · 14/05/2009 22:37

I did work out what was wrong with me before the doctor did. (gallstones)

After a bit of dismissal, it turned out i was right.

SparklyGothKat · 14/05/2009 22:42

I googled 'swollen taste bud' earlier as I have a tastebud thats swollen, and the site I went to suggested cutting it off with nailclippers [shudder] Apparently its salt or something that causes it, but I think I will just leave it to go down by itself...

Tamarto · 14/05/2009 22:43

eww i'd draw the line at that too.

Marthasmama · 14/05/2009 22:47

Could it be quinsy? I had it as a teenager and had to come home from my holiday early. It was really painful and was only on one side. My tonsil was a funny shape afterwards, now I have none.

moodlumthehoodlum · 14/05/2009 22:49

SGK - that would hurt so much..

I opened this thread to tell you that google is a very bad thing when it comes to health concerns.

But, all that's happened is that I've found myself googling 'one swollen tonsil no pain' as I've had one for months and it didn't occur to me that it could be anything too untoward.

moodlumthehoodlum · 14/05/2009 22:51

Thank you for that link, MM, he did have terrible tonsillitis in the last two weeks, so that would be something to watch. I'll give it until Monday and hope the amox does its work.

SparklyGothKat · 14/05/2009 22:51

apparently it only hurts for a second.. but nooooo I think I will just leave it, its annoying but I can't cut it off... [barf] It swelled up after I ate some peanuts the other day..

moodlumthehoodlum · 14/05/2009 22:52

sorry silver fox...

step away step away

Google - pah. Google a headache at 2.00am and you'll decide you have a brain tumour - tsk.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 26/05/2009 20:21

I was relieved to find this thread. I started another one here out of terror that my DD has leukaemia.

I had looked up her symptoms on the internet and it seemed like she had all of them. I've spent most of my day in a state of sheer panic about what is going to happen to her. It all feels so inevitable after 10 minutes on Google.

I've even been checking stuff like the number of cases each year, mean age at diagnosis, survival rates.

Can't believe I'm actually owning up to this, you must all think I am totally crazy.

squilly · 26/05/2009 20:29

I googled dd's symptoms once when we had a callback to the surgery and came back with diabetes. It wasn't, of course, but I was convinced. Spent a whole night worrying and crying.

Google is bonkers. Am never checking it again!

An no-one is bonkers for doing this, but tis a little dangerous.

Hope your ds feels much better soon.

lisad123 · 27/05/2009 23:41

well google got dh illness right but 95% of the time its all wrong.
