ds2 doesnt seem to understand anything in school withe his literacy or his numeracy. he just doesnt seem to 'get' it.

when he was conceived, i missed my period by two days and did a test on the thursday evening. it was positive. on the friday about two pm, they discovered an iodine leak in the chemical stores under my lab (i was teaching in school). it had happened about a month or so ago. i had had the windows open all the last month, and any vapours would havve come straigh tup to my room, where i was all day long, every day. the gp called the poison centre at guys hospital, and they said it would probably be fine, but wanted to know the outcome of the pregnancy.. anyways, we moved to a different part of the country, and he seemed fine when he finally arrived.

am i being silly in thinking this may have had an effect on his neurological development?

anyone?

this is anhonest query by a frustrated mom, trying to understand her dc. please tell me if i am being silly to think this couldhave had any effect on him . i am going to try and see the senco to find out if she can see him regularly too. i'd appreciate it if someone could but my mind to rest about this issue at least.

i dunno.

HaventSleptForAYear · 12/05/2009 21:30

I don't know anything about the iodine link.

But maybe you should just get DS2 checked out for something like dyslexia or dyspraxia anyway, and then if it comes up, mention the iodine thing.

Have the teachers said anything?

jkklpu · 12/05/2009 21:32

What kind of concentrations are we talking and how do they compare with guideline maximum limits? Can you contact Guy's again yourself? What do the teachers say about your lo? Have you had any concerns before school?

Yurtgirl · 12/05/2009 21:33

I have no idea on the possible affects of iodine leaks on pregnancys

How old is ds2 now? - If you have concerns regarding his literacy or numeracy abilities I would raise them with his school

Have you tried googling to find out any connection between iodine and pregnancy?

snickersnack · 12/05/2009 21:33

Can you call Guys? Their poison unit is pretty good, I think. More likely to give you a straight answer than your gp. I don't know anything about iodine, I'm afraid. You could try reposting with a more specific title - "Does anyone know anything about iodine inhalation in early pregnancy?". People on MN know the most amazing esoteric stuff - you might get a more helpful answer that way.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 12/05/2009 21:33

Have you googled iodine exposure during pregnancy?

ilovesprouts · 12/05/2009 21:33

not a clue sorry

moffat · 12/05/2009 21:34

sorry I don't know the answer or what the effects of iodine could be, and I'm not sure if a GP would know either but I think you should go and ask anyway.

I don't think any GP would laugh or think you were wasting time if you came in with these concerns. If the poison centre said it was probably fine then that's the most likely thing, but, as this is worrying you I think it is the GP's job to listen.

no. the teachers havent said anything, other than complain that he chatters in class sometimes.
he used to see the senco, but then his reading improved, ie, he learnt hw to read, but his comprehension is non existent still, and the class gained a (completely loveley) little boy, who has a quite obvious learning difficulties, and she now sees only him. she is only part time as well, is that normal?

frivol, thank you for replying, i felt quite ignored before, and appreciate the reply
havent slept, how do i go about it? i shall google both, but if you have anything else to tell me, i really appreciate it.

Sorry I don't really know, just didn't want you to be unanswered (and now you aren't!)

Must go to bed, let us know what you find out.

bargainhuntingbetty · 12/05/2009 21:40

I peersonally dont think you should be worried about being laughed at. As you say, this is a genuine issue for you and if it is keeping you awake at night then you need answers. I wouldd go to the gp, let them think what they want, you need peace of mind andd they are the people who can give it to you. Good luck and well done for being a great mum.

stitchtime · 12/05/2009 21:43

wow, thank you all.

I am hesitant to google something that i am so worried about, becuase googling always turns up the most horrendous horror stories. i googled pre eclampsia, when pregnant with ds2, which i had suffered form with ds1, and felt physically sick from the information. with ds1, i just thought it was a lttle bit of high bp iyswim.

but i shall be brave. {smile]
