Hello

My dd3 just came back from a playdate and was told she trapped her finger in their french doors to the garden. my friend didnt see but my dd said her friend closed the door on her finger.

She cried alot and is still in pain now although not crying (distracted with tv) but whimpers when she remembers. She is holding her finger wrapped in her tshirt and doesnt want me to touch it.

It looks slightly swollen and is very red from the finernail up to the tip of the finger. on the pad side of the finger its a bit bruised.

Is there anything I can do to ease the pain for her?

thank you

Can she move it? Just wondering if it might be fractured, if she is still in so much pain.

It's too late for ice, of course, but Arnica is a good idea.

Strap that finger to the one next to it. Not on knuckes, though.

Hello again

She is no longer crying and has not complained about it for awhile.

She can move the finger but wont use it and holding it close to her.

How would you know when its broken, could it be broken even if she is not crying now?

Not sure what to do, got to entertain at her cousins 1st party at 3pm.

If she as crying still then I would take her to a&e but because she isnt I am going to wait to see how she gets on.

If its still red this evening and she wont use it then i may take her then.

its hard to know when you are over reacting.

should read

"If she WAS crying still then I would take her to a&e but because she isnt I am going to wait to see how she gets on."

personally I'd give her some childrens iprobrufen for the pain and swelling but if she's stopped crying now maybe not?

Usually I'd run under cold water and cuddle lots plus pain relief. I'd say unlikely to be broken if it was the tip of the finger but i'm not a doctor and can't see it so hard to say. Don't think theres much they cna do for broken fingers or toes anyway really is there?

If she can move it without screaming the house down, it's not broken.

Basically, the difference between tissue/muscle damage and broken bone is that if it is only tissue/muscle, there is always a certain position where she will be comfortable and won't be in pain. With broken bone, there is no such comfortable position and hence constant pain. If she isn't crying now, I would think nothing is broken.

It if were broken bone, they would put her hand in a semi-hard cast to prevent the finger from moving at all. But you only need to fix it to the finger next to it so it will only have 'safe' movement.

(I played basketball in school for a few years, and had different kinds of finger injuries )
