I have a 14 month old baby/toddler who has been treated for an ear infection for the last week. I have a Drs appointment this afternoon but there is still discharge coming out of his ear and it appears that the other ear has discharge coming out of it too. He has had a cold but is also cutting his molars (poor sausage!)

I am due to go on a 4 hour flight on friday morning with him.

I will be seeing the GP this afternoon for advice. But wanted to see others experiences.....

Help!

If the eardrum has already perforated and he's on antibiotics it should be fine to fly, I think - though I'm not a doctor. The main risk of flying with a swollen eardrum is that it is very painful and might burst - but once it bursts it won't hurt anymore. This is what the GP told me when I took DS2 with an ear infection and asked about flying.

We did fly (to the US so a long flight) and his eardrum didn't burst. I dosed him up with Calpol an hour before the flight, gave him a lollipop to suck (you could breast feed or give a bottle or sippy cup, or raisins to chew if your DS is too young for a lolly), had some eardrops for topical pain relief, and then gave him Calpol and eardrops about an hour before landing and repeated the lolly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks singersgirl Just worried about pain for son and then further complications when we arrive at destination.
