Vitamin drops. Should my DS have them?

My ds is 28 weeks, and fully breastfed. We started BLW at 26 weeks, after tears and upset during any attempts at spoonfeeding, but realistically he's eating virtually nothing / nothing right now.

He has no formula at all, and refuses a bottle.

My DoH weaning leaflet says that all breastfed babies over 6 months should have drops containing vitamins A,C and D.

It also says that all children between one and five should have them.

So why don't I know anyone who has given their child vitamin drops, and why has no HV or GP ever mentioned it to me?

Should my DS have them?

Hi Jojay - my hv advised me to give drops to DS2 once he was over 6 months and to also take them myself as still bf. I do keep forgetting though but ds2 eats everything (sorry ). Have you seen your hv recently?? Has HV seen ds whilst trying to feed him? She/He may be able to offer advice about weaning etc. Why the tears/upset?? Sorry, i may have missed this on other thread but i can never keep up with it!!

Hi loulou. When I spoonfed him initially, he ended up just spitting it out, turning his head away, and if we persevered too much he would get upset and cry.

He's better with finger food, so decided that BLW was the way to go, but he still doesn't eat very much - lots of sucking and gumming, but not much goes in.

I saw my HV last week and told her that I was still bfeeding and talked about BLW. She was very supportive, but didn't mention vitamin drops, and I forgot to mention it.

I bought some today anyway as I was at the chemist, so we'll give 'em a go. Didna't get anything fo rme though, so I may get something soon.

Thanks

You may need some more iron and a general multi-vit will help (says the woman who has only had 3 of her vitamins!!)
BLW sounds like a better option if he likes to be in charge as it were but less food goes in than spoon-feeding to start with. I guess bm is more important at this stage at least til he's one i think. Hope the bottle thing sorts itself out
