my dd2 (just over 2) fell out of the car this morning, while trying to climb out - so independent!!

She smashed her face onto the floor - OMG there was so much blood! I raced her into the house, and mopped her up so i could get a good luck. Her top front tooth looked bloody at the top, but not wiggling as far as i could tell (she wouldnt let me near her too much though!). Just above her top lip there are a couple of little cuts - am guessing her tooth did some damage there?

As she seems ok in herself, drinking and eating (very soft food!), i am assuming no need for medical attention - though my first instinct was to rush her to a & e!! Her top lip is really swollen, and she keeps prodding it, but is ok (just dancing along to boogie beebies etc).

As a single parent, no one here to reassure, so thought i would post here????

Can you get an appointment with your GP to give her the once over ad make sure none of the cuts need any further attention?

Lips and gums do seem to bleed lots and there is always loads of dribble which makes it seem worse. Personally i would just see how she goes today as long as they are small and don't look like they need stitching then i wouldn't take her to dr's. If she is happy and able to eat and drink then she should be fine and the swelling should have gone down by this evening and you will be able to have a better look.

I think she'll be fine - cuts around the tongue/lips always bleed way more than you'd think possible. If she's perky and cheerful I'd leave it for now - I would try and check for wobbly teeth a bit later (and maybe just after a dose of paracetamol) but tbh if they're wobbly, they're wobbly - not much anyone can do about it.
The swelling might take a while to go down - if you can get her to hold something cold against it (or give her an ice lolly?) that might help.

travellingwilbury · 07/05/2009 10:33

Have you got any ice lollies ? It should bring the swelling down a wee bit .

I would see how she is at lunchtime and if you are not happy then give the gp a ring

I would get the dentist to look at her TBH. A tooth that has been bashed needs watching for signs of abscess formation that can damage the second tooth ultimately. This happened to my DD when she was a toddler. She needed to get her tooth removed at hospital when signs of an abscess developed.

thanks guys, the cuts are tiny compared to the amount of blood!

tooth is def not wobbling, and now she has had some ice cream (no ice lollies) and some juice, there is def no blood around it, so thinking the blood in her mouth must have been from the outside lip IYKWIM.

She is down for nap now (as normal) so will see how she is when she wakes up. She has dentist appointment in a couple of weeks, so hopefully it will be fully checked then (obv i will be checking daily in the mean time!)
