Child who keeps dodging chickenpox

I'm sure this is very common.

Ds keeps getting exposed to chickenpox but can't seem to catch it.

First time (that I know of obv) was about a year ago when he played with a friend about 3 days before her spots came out and was sharing snacks etc so pretty close contact.

Then there was a nursery outbreak.

Then his older cousin got it, although contact was towards the end of the infectious period.

Then his younger cousin got it, and he was fighting over toys with her the day she started feeling grumpy (spots next day).

Now there's another nursery outbreak but no sign of pox on the boy so far.

He's only 2.6 so plenty of time and I suppose we get exposed all the time as children and I didn't succumb until 10, but as time off will be a bit of a mare every time I think there's a chance of him getting it I start planning and then it comes to nowt!

Just slap me when I'm on in a couple of days moaning about calamine lotion and sleepless nights

It is possible to have had it so mildly you didn't notice and therefore to have immunity. Neither DH or I have ever had it, but when DS1 got it when I was pregnant with DD they tested me and found I had immunity. DH has never caught it when the kids have had it so we think he is immune too.

Take heart - he may have had it already!

madwomanintheattic · 07/05/2009 10:16

lol. he'll get it eventually. we had about 7 nursery outbreaks, and dd2 eventually got it in yr r, from apparently nowhere lol. so she started the next outbreak which even went round my vaccinated dd1 and ds1. ho hum.

I have a dd who has reached the grand old age of 11 without catching it, despite frequent outbreaks at nursery and school (including best friend!). Starting to worry a bit now as it is no joke in adulthood. All her siblings got it as tinies, before she was born. I wonder if some children sort of take on their mother's immunity?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 07/05/2009 10:22

My friend has got it atm - she's 26!

smallchange · 07/05/2009 10:25

I did wonder about him having my immunity the first time as I'd just stopped bf. I suppose he could have got it very mildly (but no spots?). I suspect madwoman's right though and he'll get it eventually.

Oh well. I dare say there's no harm in having a pox plan (less glam than a zombie plan).

Actually Iwish, I now remember a friend getting it at uni after volunteering at a playscheme.

(if it's any consolation coffee, she got it very mildly so I don't think it's necessarily a problem for adults)

Ds1 did this - he was at day nursery and exposed to it loads and loads from the age of 8 months on. Eventually, he got it at the age of 5 1/2 when dd picked it up and gave it to her brothers. He had it v mildly though, so I wonder if he had already had a small dose when we didn't notice . Poor ds2 was only 10 months though and he was COVERED.

Anifrangapani · 07/05/2009 10:30

My brother has never got it. Apparently some people carry it but never show symptoms.

kickassangel · 07/05/2009 10:37

i had it age 22, in spite of numerous close encounters as a child.
i had it everywhere, outside & IN. ouch

Elibean · 07/05/2009 10:37

dd1 was the same, and I swore she was immune till she had it (moderately badly) aged 4. dd2 shared a bath with her, played with her, got coughed and sneezed on, and didn't catch it.

But I am not counting my chicken(poxes) till they hatch

saintmaybe · 07/05/2009 10:38

My three sisters had it when I was little, but I caught it super-mildly at 35.

WowOoo · 07/05/2009 10:41

I was exposed to it lots as a child and probably had it very mildly.

Not sure how my immune system is. Hope to avoid shingles in later life.
