I have finally found something that works for DSs excema, but it is costing a fortune...

We have tried all the usual prescribed stuff, oilatum, doublebase, steroid cream etc etc and most of it just aggravated it

But we have been doing dead sea salt baths twice a day, and Aveeno cream 3 times a day for 3 WEEK and to my amazement his eczema has cleared up to a tiny little patch about the size of a 20p piece

But it is costing a fortune! If I went to the GP and told her we had found something that worked is she allowed to write a script for it? has anybody else done this?

We get 4 tubes of Aveeno a month on a repeat prescription. I bought one tube myself and it worked, so I just went to the GP and firmly said "this works, I want it on prescription please. I know it is on the list of things you can prescribe".

DeathbyDora this site does the baby range - I've not tried it though. If you do a search on the site for Aveeno there is even an antiwrinkle cream

Ordinary sea salt in the bath has sorted DS's (relatively mild, but nonetheless uncomfortable) eczema out. We have never found an emollient that really helped.

I suspect the concentrated salt solution kills any bacteria lurking in the sore/weepy patches so it is working in a similar way to antibiotics.

out of interest, what is the ingredient list for the sea salts?

has anyone ordered dead sea salt from these peoplewww.westlabshop.co.uk/products.asp?cat=36 they do it in bulk so it works out a lot cheaper.

Agree that Aveeno is great.

Have those of you on water meters checked out the watersure tariff most water companys offer is you have excema and other conditions. Have to be on qualifying benefits but WTC and higher rate CTC is one. Worth looking into and may save you money with all the extra baths etc.

The salt we use is Tidman's Bath Sea salt - it is produced by the same company that produce Maldon sea salt. Sainsbury's sell it (look in the same place as Radox). According to the box, it contains only sea salt.

this page gives the chemical composition

hi sherby, this sounds fab! we got aveeno prescribed from gp although it didn't work for ds2
ask for referral to paed dermatologist if they won't prescribe it - takes about a month to get seen but will save you money in long term
hope he stays well

well I ordered some dead sea salt and it has just arrived so I will try it out later (I have psoriosis).I got 20 kgs of salt for £58.90,so its alot cheaper than the little packets. Luckily it is in 4 bags of 5 kgs not one huge bag!

Hi all, I currently use Hydramol ointment for ds's eczema which is brilliant at moisturising the skin but doesn't seem to do much to control the itching. Unfortunatley it's only on his face and neck so is difficult to stop him rubbing it etc. Does the Aveeno cream help with itching does anyone know? And does anyone know any good shampoos to use?
