Any tips on getting a urine sample from a non-potty trained toddler?

My GP wants me to get a urine sample from my 23mo dd, who is not yet potty trained. I've been trying, unsuccessfully for a week, and have tried the following methods:

  1. The plastic bag with a hole in it that the GP told me to line her nappy with - it didn't 'catch the urine' at all!
  1. She normally wees every night when she gets in the bath, but when I put the sample pot up to catch it, she stops weeing and sits down!
  1. Leaving her with her nappy off - she just asks for it to be put back on, we haven't really introduced the concept of the potty yet.
  1. I put a flannel in her nappy last night, but when I changed her this morning, it was damp, not wet enough to be wrung out, IYSWIM.

Any ideas? I don't want her to have to go to hospital for the sample to be taken as this test is just a precautionary measure.

TIA

We got a potty for this reason, when DD was 22mo. Managed to keep DD on it long enough with the right combination of bribery stories and chocolate. We gave her tonnes to drink beforehand to be more confident of success.

Good luck!

Thanks Martha - will try again when I am home with her on Thursday. It's a blimmin' nuisance!

My docter suggested a sanitary pad in the nappy with loads to drink beforehand
It worked for dd

When DD had to give a sample, the doctor just gave me a liner to put inside nappy and we waited around in the surgery until she weed on it. I didn't need to wring it out.

They gave me a plastic bag with a hole in it, but it didn't catch her urine at all!

When I took dd to A&E, they had a special sort of bag with sticky edges that you put around the whole vulva/labia area. Could you phone the surgery and ask whether they have one of these, or is this what you've already had?

Pinkjenny · 05/05/2009 09:48

No, it didn't have sticky edges, just a long thin bag with a hole in. It didn't work anyway, so I need to think of something else. Am liking the cotton wool idea.

Your GP surgery should have the collection bags with the adhesive edges available for you. Worth giving them a call, if the receptionist can't help then try speaking to your health visitor. They should be able to track one down for you.

She has her 2 year check next Monday with the HV, so I'll persevere this week and ask her on Monday if I have still had no success.
