she has dark hair,
compared with her sister, also dark haired, but a hairless back.
dd2 has hair from her neck down in a sort of V.

concerned for her
is this normal.
perhaps the sun will bleach them?

My four yr old dd doesn't have dark hair but also has quite a hairy back in that area. She does have quite thick eyebrows and when she was a newborn, she had a hairy forehead!! That gradually went away and I am assuming that the hairy back with slowly go as well. How old is your dd?

peggotty · 03/05/2009 20:42

will slowly go as well

How old is she?

My very dark haired when born DD had a line of soft dark hair from the nape of her neck right down to her bum, as well as tufty ears and a hairy forehead like pegotty's DD. she's 2 now and it's all disappeared and her hair is much much lighter, although she is still very downy.

LackaDAISYcal · 03/05/2009 20:51

Ah, 12....has it started recently or gotten worse? It might be hormonal? I know that PCOS can cause hirsuteness in women; might be worth a mention to the GP?

peggotty · 03/05/2009 20:51

Ah she'a quite a bit older then. Are you worried about potential teasing from other kids? I have sometimes wondered what I should do if my dd still has a hairy back when she's older. Is she aware of it?

SnortyBartFast · 03/05/2009 20:54

yes i am worried, as she is, her brother noticed!
i am not sure if has only just come - i remember as a baby but can't say i noticed it.. i did google and found out about pcos but she hasnt started her periods.

Probably best to take her to gp to get checked out as lackadaisycal says, then if all is well, you can start to think about removing/bleaching the hair if she's worried or embarassed about it.

LackaDAISYcal · 03/05/2009 21:00

aw, poor thing

I'm sure it isn't as noticeable as she thinks and thinking back, a few of my school friends were much hairier than everyone else and didn't come in for any teasing that I was aware of.

I'd get her checked out though.

i would see GP as well, just to see what they say.
if normal then I can see no reason not to do something about it if it upsets her. I prob wouldn't shave it cos that's just a vicious cycle. am guessing waxing would hurt a fair bit.
bleaching?

as much as I would love to say leave her as she is because she IS perfect, it isn't fair if it makes her unhappy is it?

Poledra · 03/05/2009 21:12

I have a patch of hair in the small of my back, which my DD1 has inherited. I don't remember ever getting teased about it, but I am fair. My DH loves it and he is the first person I remember mentioning it to me, though I was aware of it myself.

Agree with everyone else - see the GP and, if it's just her natural hair growth, then help her do something about it if that's what will make her happy and confident about herself.

SnortyBartFast · 03/05/2009 21:18

thanks for the advice

hoping for sympathetic gp

I have this - have had for years. I bleach it - this means I am not tied to a specific regime - eg if you wax or something your always going to have to do it because otherside you will have spikey back hair. Bleaching makes it MUCH less noticable. I use the one from boots, you mix the 2 creams together. It starts to itch on me after about 7 mins and I usually wash it of about 30 seconds after then and its all pale.

I have a lot of gynae problems but tests havent shown that mine is definetly related to any of them. Mihgt be worth seeing GP but IMO bleaching is the way to go after that - if she wants of course - if shes confident to leave it then thats fine too.

that's reassuring girafes -
