Thrush, molluscum, what the hell is wrong with ds's bits?!

I don't know what to do. Ds is 10 months. A few weeks ago the end of his willy went massively red and swollen. After 2 trips to the doctor they diagnosed ballanitis (swollen willy basically) and thrush and gave anti biotics and canesten. It worked briefly, the swelling went down and the rash cleared up.
BUT
Until then, ds had had quite bad molluscum on his arms and trunk. Aftre a few days on the antibiotics they disappeared overnight. But new ones appeared in his nappy. The doctor was sure they were molluscum and nothing to worry about. But they look completely different. They are huge white blisters, but when you pop them (sorry, tmi) there is nothing in there. The tip of his willy is also looking swollen again with white blotches which makes me thnk it's thrush again.
I've put some harmless pics on my profile of the spots. Does anyone have a clue what is wrong????

I'd got back to the gp and demand they take swabs. Dd had problems for over a year - peeling skin, raw, bleeding etc etc turns out it was strep A.

The only way they will know for sure is by taking swabs.

they dont look like molluscum to me (dd had them for over a year and ds has some now)

littlelamb · 03/05/2009 20:01

Seona, they look nothing like the molluscum ds had on his body either. They are just empty blisters. I think they just gave that as an easy diagnosis as he already had them. But they are localised to his nappy area, and it is hard to leave him with his nappy off as all he does is scratch
Strep A sounds dreadful

I don't necessarily think it is just that dd suffered horrendously for a year, she had every symptom of peri-anal strep and a sinmple swab would have diagnosed it.

Fortunately she had started her 4 week antibiotic course to treat it when she came out with chicken pox, untreated strep A could have got into her blood stream and killed her.

I just keep trying to educate people that persistant nappy rash/unusual nappy rash needs to be swabbed.

Seona1973 · 03/05/2009 20:25

impetigo maybe?

Elibean · 03/05/2009 21:04

dd1 just had a strep infection on her labia poor love. The GP thought she'd probably scratched a molluscum spot/other spot of some sort - and it got infected. Very common, apparently.

She was on amoxycillin for a week, then it came back, then she had Penicillin V for a week and now its gone - strangely, so are the spots, which doesn't sound much like molluscum (and she had them nowhere else, just on her genitals/upper inner thighs).

I would definitely get them to swap your ds, and ask about possible strep infections, but also ask if he could have had an allergic reaction to the canesten - some people can do, apparently.

littlelamb · 03/05/2009 21:39

Ah, I hadn't thought of a reaction to the canesten. I've stopped using it tbh and for the last few days have been putting sudocrem on. Do you think it's worth a trip to the walk in centre tomorrow? It's been ever so difficult to get an appointment at our surgery recently and I guess they'll be busy on tuesday. It seems to be getting worse, with more spots every day. It can't be comfortable for him

Walk in centre doesn't treat children under 2, plus to get swabs done think you would need to go to gp not out of hours service.

littlelamb · 03/05/2009 21:43

Cargirl, we have 2 walk in centres here. Last time I took him to the one at the hospital where the on call doctors are based. The one in town is useless

Doesn't look like molluscum which you didn't think anyway.
Is there a bit of liquid inside the blisters? Could he have chickenpox?

I would take him back to dr's and swabbing them sounds like a v sensible idea.

I am so intrigued - please let us know what it turned out to be.

Hope he will be ok v soon .

littlelamb · 03/05/2009 21:52

Mummyfor3, it could be chicken pox. It's a very long shot though. We went to a play place with drowninginclutter and her ds who had been exposed to chicken pox, and I believe he is now poorly with it. It was only about 2 hours a few weeks ago though He has been poorly, but I put it down to teething. Very different from dd's chocken pox experience but she was much older wheh she got them. It just seems odd thta it's all around his willy and nowhere else. I will definately be asking for swabs this time. But there doesn't seem to be anything to swab iyswim.
