Cos DS's are HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE.

Like two red marbles. Is this normal? Tonsils are supposed to go up and down aren't they, to, erm, catch all the nasties on their way past (apologies for somewhat simplistic medical interpretation )

Can't say I've really noticed before whether they were this big or not at any other point. But he yawned earlier and they were so noticeable I thought Jeeeesus.

Has he got a sore throat atm?
Is he choking on them? ...or stopping breathing at night?
Dd had her tonsils and adenoids out when she was three. She had repeated throat and ear infections for a year when she was 2 and then got scarlet fever which just seemed to totally muck up her tonsils totally.I think they were just doing more harm than good in the end. They stopped going down and just stayed huge. She ended up with a space of about 1cm square to eat and breathe through. This caused sleep apnea (sp) and we realised she was stopping breathing about 12 times a night.
She was even choking on them when awake.
Once the doctor examined them and coupled with the breathing thing...She had them (and adenoids)removed really quickly.

Thanks for your reply.

He doesn't seem to choke, but he has just started on a steroid inhaler for presumed asthma because of constant coughing at night.

Another thing is he drools a lot and complains of food often 'getting stuck' in his throat (but not actual choking as such).

I dunno. He has these weird glands on his neck that have been 'up' (like little peas) for years. They have been investigated with blood screening etc and apparently nothing serious but I am wondering if he's getting throat stuff over and over too...

Every time we've been to the doc with the cough though, they've looked in his throat.

Definately go to your GP and ask for an ENT referral. My ds 2.10 is having his tonsils and adenoids out on wednesday. We asked for an ENT appointment due to humungous tonsils and constant tonsillitis but we found out that he has severe sleep apnoea ( 262 desaturations in 8 hours) after having a sleep study done and this is why he is having the op. Does he snore at night and do big gasps as well as coughing?

All I can add is that if he does have problem tonsils, I would recommend getting them out sooner rather than later. My problems with my throat started with a horrendous case of tonsillitus when I was about 15, and I had attacks every few months until I was 22 and hospitalised. It took another year to get them out, and they are very reluctant to do it for adults. Apparently it's much less painful for a child to have done.

large tonsils can cause coughing at night, IME - dd2 was given inhalers as a baby in case she had asthma, but they never made any difference at all. She developed severe sleep apnoea (gasping for air every few minutes for large parts of the night) and had them, and her adenoids, out in January aged 2.2.....no coughing now

Her eating as improved, and she sleeps much, much better now. So do we! I'd keep an eye on him, and get an ENT assessment if you have any concerns.

Thanks for all your replies. His tonsils are still large. I'll see how it goes over the next week.

I have been resisting the asthma diagnosis but the steroids do seem to have made a difference to the coughing so I don't know...

oops... random namechange hangover there.

Thanks anyway.
