I took DS (4) to the GP today he came home from school fine but then developed a painfull penis and was screaming when he needed a wee. He does have a history of Ballonitus and his penis ballons up at the end when he's having a wee he has always had a tight foreskin. GP has given me some Canisten to sooth it but wants to see DS in the next few weeks to discuss our options and circumsision as he thinks the foreskin in closing up rather than opening up as we had hoped. Any advice or experiences? DP was done as a child but can't remeber so he's no use! TIA

Yes. DS2 has exactly the same problem.

He is having an operation next month. The consultant said they will decide in the operating theatre whether to go for a full circumcision or just a small cut in the foreskin to open up the hole at the end where the urine comes out. The aim is to stop the foreskin ballooning when DS2 urinates and also so it can be retracted so that DS2 can clean the glans properly.

It is to some extent genetic but varies from person to person and can right itself but not I think if it is as bad as you say in your DS.

Our DS2 is 7 but has had the problem since 4.

I am assuming it will be a GA rather than a Local - i would prefer for him to be properly asleep if they are going to do something like that?

my son is 3 and had a very serious infection so he had a circumcision about 3 mths ago.they are awake for the operation what they do is put cream on it and you wait 20 mins.it is painful for the fisrt day and when its done he may just want to sleep.i would suggest that you get calpol in and dont remove the bandage for 24 hours although my son took his off.it looks bad for about 2-3 weeks but as long as you keep it clean it will be fine. if you have any more questions i would be happy to answer them

Thanks

Did you DS stay still while they did it? I can't imagine DS staying still while they did something so delicate.

Also was he ok with paracetamol, could he go for a wee ok afterwards?

DS has had surgery before but he was under a GA so i think it would worry me if it was just numbed!

Yes a GA.

My DS had this done when he was four. He had a GA for the op. I stayed with him while he went to sleep but not for procedure. It was very sore for a few days afterwards - took him about ten days IIRC to be comfortable again. He couldn't bear anything touching him afterwards so he wore long loose t-shirts and I 'tented' his duvet over him at night with pillows. Also followed a friend's advice and bought him new bath toys to make the many soothing baths he took a little more enjoyable. Would recommend loose boxers and soft tracksuits or PJs for when he's up and about. My DS had to wee before he left hospital - everything was in working order but he was nervous and very upset by the sight of blood etc and had to be coaxed to wee for a while afterwards. On the upside he no longer suffers from recurrent infections.

my ds has this problem and I'm hoping very much to avoid surgery.

My DS1 had this problem and was operated on a couple of months ago. It was under GA and nowhere near as bad as we thought it was going to be. He's fine now, it was a bit sore for a week. HTH

he did stay still but we had spoken to him before and showed him with a teddy bear what had to be done.he was ok with paracetamol just wanted to sleep.it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be it just didnt look very nice and when he saw it he did cry. he weed fine and it helped us to get him out of nappies as the nappy hurt him. i agree with elliephant.the pro defo outweigh the cons. the longest we were told it would still hurt for was about 10 days ,but i do believe our son played on it abit especially when daddy came home from work, hed be running around all day as soon as he heard the key in the door hed sit down and get daddy to carry him everywhere

My DS had this problem. He had an op under GA when he was 5. He had had recurring infections and sobbed when even thinking of weeing because he dreaded the pain. He went for a wee shortly after the op and commented "I look just like X" (a muslim boy in his class).
He is now 13 and has had no problems since - well you can't get an infection under the foreskin if the foreskin has been removed. His school has lots of Jewish and Muslim pupils and so his new circumcised look fitted in well!
