Vomiting then high temperature

Dd2 (2.10) had slight runny nose at start of week. She was sick once on Monday (during her first morning at pre-school so was only there an hour!). Seemed fine the rest of Monday and Tuesday - apart from slight snot.

On wednesday she woke up at 6am and started vomiting - she finished at about 8pm apart from a couple during the night.

Thursday - sick once at 10am. Very sleepy. Drinking not eating. Temp about 38.

Today - temp has gone up to 40.2, but does respond to calpol. Once calpol wears off it creeps back up again. Looks very flushed and weak. Drinking not eating. Spent whole day in bed.

Is this familiar to anyone else? My other children have done occasional vomiting with a high temp, but not sickness bug type vomiting and then a high temp iykwim.

I'm not in any particular hurry to go to docs as she responds to calpol, but how long do you leave it? If she still had temp on Sunday would you go?

If she is keeping fluids down I think it will die down over the weekend. If she starts refusing fluids again for any length of time I would get her to a GP. Does sounds like a nasty virus to me.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 01/05/2009 21:44

One of mine started chicken pox with scarily hogh temp and vomiting

BoysAreLikeDogs · 01/05/2009 21:44

high temp

spudmasher · 01/05/2009 21:48

DD1 has just got over virus with exact same symptoms. Took her to drs and he said it was a flu virus. Calpol and plenty of rest and fluids. She is still weak. We live in London- something going round? If you feel at all unsure go to the drs out of hours to put your mind at rest.

pigsinmud · 01/05/2009 21:56

Thanks. I'm happy as long as calpol brings the temp down. I tend to ride things out - haven't had antibs for the children in years .... I realise I shouldn't have said that as I'll probably be at Gps on Tuesday collecting some!!

Spudmasher - I'm in Surrey so not far away..

This sounds like DD 3, who turned out to have scarlet fever. I WISH i'd not just dismissed it as a bug of some kind and got her to the docs sooner.

We are in West London - she wasn't the first case the doc had seen that week, if that helps. It's also in Kent...

Sycamoretree · 01/05/2009 22:00

Schilke - here's my thread, so you can get the picture...scarlet fever thread

Sycamoretree · 01/05/2009 22:13

BTW, no saying your DC has scarlet fever, just saying it's def worth checking out. I also tend to ride things out, but it bit me a bit on the arse this time

wilkos · 01/05/2009 22:19

dd had a similar thing a month ago, temp kept spiking had to keep giving calpol, when temp got really high vomiting etc. after a week panicked and took her to gp who diagnosed a virus (well whaddya know )

she lost some weight as a result of not eating properly but after a bit of r and r was back to normal

nose ran for a month tho! she is 20 months btw

pigsinmud · 01/05/2009 22:58

Thanks sycamoretree. She doesn't have a rash at the moment. Her cheeks are very red. Just been up to check on her and she's fast asleep, but feels very hot - haven't disturbed her with ear thermometer.

Dd1's closest friend had scarlet fever about a month ago, but I don't know of anyone else around here.

It's just rotten isn't it. I think if the fever doesn't break tomorrow significantly then you should get her to an out of hours GP. You never know, it could be something that needs abs and the sooner you get cracking on them the better everyone's lives will be (currently on day 9 of sleep broken at least 4 times a night, even though I'd say she's 80% better now).

pigsinmud · 02/05/2009 07:49

Well, temp is down to 38 this morning. She's talking, so I think she feels better. Eyes still look glassy, but hopefully she's through the worst bit.

Hope your little one is better soon sycamoretree. Fortunately through all of this week she has slept really well, apart from the vomiting night.

That's good news schilke.

Yes, DD is better. Ate loads today and is back to arguing at full volume with DS.

pigsinmud · 02/05/2009 18:02

Not going quite so well. I can't get her to eat or drink. She had a few swigs of milk this morning and nothing since then. Not so worried about the eating, but she won't drink. Her mouth looks a little red, but nothing spectacular - tongue looks a bit coated.

She is fairly hysterical today, but temp has returned to normal. Came downstairs this morning, but has resumed her position in my bed watching cbeebies.

How do I get her to drink? I've tried water, squash, juice, milk, coffee (really frothed milk with 2 grounds of instant coffee!) and she won't have any of it.

Glad your dd is feeling better. It's amazing how arguing can be seen as a positive thing at times!

Schilke - definitely take her to docs now I think - how many days now she's been like this? If she won't drink that's more of a concern - and the tongue. My DD lost so much weight, she went swimming yesterday for her lesson and the teacher was at how much smaller she was from 2 weeks ago.

Sorry if I'm projecting too much on your thread! Just kicking myself I didn't take DD sooner.

blinks · 03/05/2009 01:05

try ice lollies.

often when they have a sore throat, they won't drink.

keep an eye on her urine output. if she becomes dehydrated you need to get her seen and rehydrated.

hophophippidtyhop · 03/05/2009 20:21

Just spoken to out of hours doctor myself as dd 20mo has been vomiting. she said no dairy or juices, dairy is not good if they actually have gastroenteritius as they are usually lactose intolorant with it. Hope she feels better soon.

pigsinmud · 04/05/2009 21:06

She seems better, but very whiney and obviously not much energy. Not eating much and still reallyy reluctant to drink.

Urine output is rubbish. Today she had 150mls of milk this morning and the same this evening. A few sips of water during the day, but hardly anything. It's weird - she just doesn't want to drink?!

OP posts:
blinks · 05/05/2009 01:56

you should get her seen if she's not drinking and her urine output is bad. are her hands and feet/lips an ok colour?

hophophippidtyhop · 05/05/2009 09:17

actually took dd to out of hours clinic monday, they then monitored her at hospital. the coated tongue could be dehydration as they checked hers for that. pull the skin on her belly, if it doesn't bounce back, this is dehydration too.

Sycamoretree · 05/05/2009 13:21

Schilke - please take your DD to the doctors today as an emergency appt.

Sounds like she's getting dehydrated. It's not good, she does need to see someone now.

pigsinmud · 05/05/2009 21:05

Thank goodness - she's drinking!! She also spent ages on potty as she hadn't done a poo for almost a week. She seemed much much happier after that.

I was going to phone gp today if she didn't drink, but no need now.

Thanks for all the replies.
