Is it OK to put medicine in milk for an extremely stubborn toddler who hates spoons?

I remember hearing something about how it was very unsafe to crush tablets into food, because the active ingredient was absorbed too quickly by the stomach.

Is this the same with putting Calpol (say) into milk?

DS is ill but steafstly refuses spoons of medicine. I really don't want to force feed him.

Help please!

sorry I don't know if milk changes the composition of calpol but have you tried using a small oral syringe to squirt it into his mouth?

alicecrail · 01/05/2009 07:57

Have you tried syringing it? I know some people swear by it

Sometablets you can crush, it depends on the drug, the best person to ask about that is the pharmacist.

Personally I don't like putting medicine in milk or food simply because you don't know how much they're getting. Syringe is a good alternative but can still involve a struggle. We used to use dd's syringes in the bath as toys squirting the tiles etc so she wasn't afraid of them (she took lots of meds).

Thank you for your replies.

He is, if anything, more anti-syringe than anti-spoon!!

Mind you this is a child who refuses to wear his shampoo shield AND refuses to be shampooed without a life and death struggle.

he still has bottles at times, especially when crook, so I'll continue with that.

Thanks again x.
