Oh Grommits! What a worry...

Hi,
Hi,

I have just seen a consultant today who has advised that my daughter who is 16 months old has an operation to have grommits inserted in both ears. I am so worried about this as I dont really know what to do.

She has had 9 ear infections in 6 months, had antibiotics but her ears never seem to recover. When she does have an infection they usually burst and horrible sticky gung comes out.

Please can anyone give me advice or has your child had it done? If so was it worth it?

Thanks....

Don't worry.
One of mine had it done.
She was almost deaf and got lots of ear infections. Now she hears perfectly and only gets the odd ear infection.

It's an easy routine op.

I know, you are still going to worry. The bit where they knock them out is quite unpleasant to watch.
If you get an early in the day slot for the op, you should be home the same day.

Well worth it IMO

Same here as elfinblast, it really is over very very quickly and they recover in no time, so don't worry too much.

Thanks girls - that info helps. Can you see any reason for not getting it done at all?

Just trying to weigh it all up as i read an article that said it made no difference!

It can make loads of difference. My DD has had two lots and she was fine. Her hearing improved loads literally straight away. It's really worrying for a parent but they'll only be under the anaesthetic (sp) for 15, sleep for an hour then perk up and eat like a horse. They also always do the youngest children first so DD wasn't waiting around long with an empty tummy.
Hope it all goes well.

How about looking into cranial osteopathy if you don't fancy the idea of grommits?

Again thanks - its so amazing to get this information. I will go ahead and get it done. As she is so young its difficult to tell at the moment how much it is bothering her hearing but it all sounds positive.

vnew - my DS was only 10 months when he had his first set - he sailed through the whole thing no problem - the staff were great although were arguing over who got to cuddle him in the recovery room before I got there! ;-)
