Does this warrant a trip to the doctor?

Dd2 is 22 months. She has a barking, chesty cough which has got worse over the last few days. She didn't sleep well last night and this morning she is red hot (although typically, I have lost the thermometer )

I have been giving Calpol and Ibruprofen, but they don't seem to have an effect.

Dd1 is 3 and she too has a cough, but no temerature and a general cold.

Is it worth taking dd2 to the doctor? I have never actually had to take her yet as she is as fit as an ox!

Thanks

How is she in herself? Is she playing, eating, drinking, weeing, as normal?

flamingobingo · 30/04/2009 07:26

Not really for us to say - sorry! I, personally, wouldn't, unless the cough was causing her a breathing problem. On the other hand, if her temp was going up and not coming down with meds then I might. Go on what your instinct's telling you - you're with her, and we're not.

i would take sounds like croup could need something for it ds was given some medicine to help open airways

could be nothing justa cold but i would still take clearly not well

bubblagirl · 30/04/2009 07:31

croup is very painful in there throats when coughing doesnt cause breathing problems necessarily but is painful for them take and be on the safe side she is clearly unwell bless her

Thanks for replies.

She isn't eating as much, but taking in fluids, so that's a good sign. No breathing problems.

She's not as active as usual, more sleepy and keeps saying 'I poorly Mummy' before snuggling in for a cuddle.

Her eyes are a bit puffy-looking. But I'm not sure the doctor can do anything for a common cold so don't want to time waste.

I'm just not used to seeing her poorly.

Well if she's just not herself but not in pain or anything, then I'd just nurse her at home - last thing she wants is being dragged out somewhere she doesn't need to go! Take her if she gets much worse or gets in pain or anything.

bubblagirl · 30/04/2009 07:39

its the barking cough part that makes me think its more than just cold could be croup best to check it

Confuzzeled · 30/04/2009 07:51

Personally I would take my dd if we were in your shoes, when it comes to chest infections or croup I don't take chances. But my dd ended up with Bronchilitis when she was tiny so she is prone to chest infections.

We have a nurse practitioner at my gp's, I can get her to have a listen to dd's chest when she gets bad. On few occasions it's been nothing more serious than a cold and I always say sorry for wasting time, but they always tell me not to be silly and it's better to have them checked than not.

monkeypinkmonkey · 30/04/2009 07:57

If your worried about your dd your not wasting the doctors time.

SummatAnNowt · 30/04/2009 08:58

If you are wondering whether she should see the doctor then she should. The cough sounds bad.

My doctor once said it's never time wasting to see children.

Thanks again fo advice- a quick update: I took her to the GP this afternoon and her temp was 39.4 despite calpol and ibruprofen for another day. GP prescribed antibios but said her cest is fine and throat is not too bad.

Glad I took her now, she was just not herself.
