My house guests, arrived from India today....
Boys aged 8 and 11. Became ill on the plane, D&V, now developed a temperature of 103. Shallow rapid breathing, sleepy.
Shall I take them to A&E or is a temp like this ok with 'delhi belly'??

I would say yes.

Lulumama · 28/04/2009 17:37

yes, take them.. can easily become dehydrated.. at the least, phone docs for advice. you are presuming it is delhi belly, could be something else..

abigproblem · 28/04/2009 17:38

What do their parents think ?????

TitsalinaBumsquash · 28/04/2009 17:40

Whats Delhi Belly?

I would phone NHS Direct for advice.

Blu · 28/04/2009 17:43

Delhi Belly is colloquial / generic name for stomach upsets generally caused by amoebic / bacterial gut infections....v common when travelling in India. Alledgedly.

i think A&E. poor them and poor you
are they on their own?

Northernlurker · 28/04/2009 18:10

Another vote for A&E - they could just be knackered with being ill and flying - or it could be something more serious. Sleepy and high temp is a 'Proceed straight to A&E, do not pass Go' for me.

Blu · 28/04/2009 23:37

Thank you everyone.

In the end we got detailed advice form NHS direct who gave a clear list of triggers to proceed straight to A&E, but said otherwise keep temp down with calpol and keep hydration up with sips of water.

Happily they do seem tohave settled rather than stayed the same or got worse.

They are Canadian, not NHS patients, so my GP wouldn't speak to them, but we could have taken them to A&E if needs be.

Moral: Don't drink milky drinks in India, even if they come from a refrigerated government dairy stall at the airport!! Cold Butterscotch milk - the only iced drink available in a 4 hour wait in a non-air conditioned airport. You can see the temptation.

My GP is so happy to see my mom when she visits from California. They just take her insurance details and she pays for any prescriptions
