Just tried to get some medised for my ds & it's now gone from over age 2 to over age 6! Obviously am worried about what on earth i have done to the poor boy as he's been taking it since he was 3 months - but am also worried about the sleepless nights!!

same here - was ok for ds1 to have it from 3mo but obviously I was poisioning him as ds2 only allowed it from 2 now can't get it at all! ds2 full of cold at mo and calpol just isn't cutting - calpol night has been recommended to me tho

WindUpBird · 28/04/2009 18:25

I know. DD who is now 3 had Medised on a number of occasions through her first year or two :-( I even used to use it sometimes when she didn't have a cold,, it was the only thing which got her to sleep sometimes. Why is it banned, what is it supposed to do to babies???

I assume Calpol Night must have the same ingredients and is also only recommended for older children?

malfoy · 28/04/2009 18:27

When did they change the minimum age?

ladymoo · 29/04/2009 19:47

Yep calpol night has the same magical sleep ingredient, diphenadryl or something like that. Must have all changed quite recently - normal calpol is rubbish when ds is teething really badly - doesn't touch the sides!! I asked the pharmacist and she said it had given some babies hallucinations - how can they tell???

This was changed a while ago.

ladymoo · 29/04/2009 19:59

i know it was changed to 2 ages ago but was surprised when she said 6 - why 6 anyway?

6?!! Oh my gosh...

girlandboy · 29/04/2009 20:09

Well, I have obviously poisoned my ds, because he virtually lived on the stuff for years.

SlightlyMadSwineFlu · 29/04/2009 20:10

It was changed again about a month ago. In fact I think I am right in saying all cough medicines (with teh exception of a basic glycerine suspension) are now only suitable for children over 6.

If you search teh archives you will find lots of debate and explainations for it.

ladymoo · 29/04/2009 20:10

so pleased to hear you say that! might have to buy a secret bottle for my "6" year old for emergencies!!

previous thread

I can't find the thread I was thinking of where I listed the reasons for withdrawal - but they include the fact that there have been no clinical trials in children and therefore no proven medical benefit. There are also potential side effects including hyper-drowsiness and hallucinations. Therefore risk v benefit has led them to withdraw the license for under 6's.

That thread also includes links to the products affected and original press releases.

I wish I'd read this thread before last night, when my dd2 (nearly 5) was complaining of sore legs at 4am and I gave her Medised because I couldn't find any Nurofen/Calpol. (We must have bought the Medised last year and it has a recommended dosage for age 2-6 printed on the label).

Instead of drifting off to sleep, about 15 minutes after taking the Medised dd2 started giggling hysterically and claiming that the light on our bedroom ceiling was an eye She carried on giggling and repeating this for a looooong time. And didn't get to sleep until about 6am.

So yes, it appears that it can cause hallucinations.
