Hay Fever in a 4 yr old

Can anyone recommend anything that works in a 4 yr old and is ok to give them? I had a quick scoot round in Boots at the weekend but everything seemed to be for 6 yrs +. However the pharmacist was at lunch so I didn't ask for advice. I bought some Haymax but it doesn't seem to have made much difference, and DS is miserable and fed up with sneezing already! Thanks.

I give my dd piriton.

SoupDragon · 27/04/2009 10:02

Benadryl syrup is non-drowsy. Be careful as (IIRC) there is a 6+ version and an under 6 version.

purepurple · 27/04/2009 10:03

when ds was younger i gave him piriton too
it had the added benefit of making him extra sleepy [evil mother emoticon]

Take him to the GP - DS has a clarityn-equivalent syrup on prescription.

SoupDragon · 27/04/2009 10:05

The Benadryl Syrup is suitable from age 2 and the oral solution from age 6.

Having said that, once they're 6 they can progress to cetirizine hydrochloride tablets which Boots do a one-a-day version of. There's also a cheapy version in the "value healthcare" range.

DS1 suffers terribly in summer (mostly at school only) and has done from when he started school. He's 10 now and we keep a pack of the tablets in the car (and my bag)

Thanks for this, perhaps I'll take him to the GP and get it on prescription. He's a huge sleeper (14 hours a night is what he likes!) so I'm reluctant to give him anything drowsy! I was hoping someone would come up with a marvellous non-chemical solution but never mind My hay fever starts in April but is gone by end of June so I'm hoping he'll be the same.

Supposedly having a teaspoon of local honey each day is meant to help.

That's the stuff, profiterolethief. I asked for it on the basis that it is the only one which works for me so seemed a good place to start for DS. He has actually not been too bad so I am holding off for now, but I suffered miserably throughout childhood and teens and won't let him go through the same - I am still not sure if the drugs were not available or if my DM didn't 'believe' in them but I spent all summer every summer with a dripping nose and avoiding playing/sitting on grass

ooh that is interesting about the honey. my dp suffers teribly from hayfever, maybe honey is the answer??

stealthsquiggle · 27/04/2009 10:42

sorry profiterolethief - I meant I suffered without drugs. I will give DS them as/when he needs them - ATM the only symptom he reports is that the horse chestnut blossom at school makes his eyes water - but only if he is very close (answer - don't go so close ). Drugs are clearly not ideal but infinitely better than hayfever - I take loratadine myself from first signs of spring (me waking up with raging sore throat every morning) through to autumn.
