Nappy rash - fungal?

Hi - took my 3 year old son to GP on Thursday as he has a very itchy and painful rash around his anus. It was very red and weepy - he may very well have made it worse himself with itching and rubbing.

GP said it was a fungal infection and prescribed Canestan HC cream.

The rash seems a tiny little bit better but he is still itching like mad and he actually just woke up crying trying to get at it (which prompted this post!).

Anyone had any experience of "nappy rash gone mental" like this? And, do you think I should take him back to the GP tomorrow or give the Canestan a little longer to work?

Thank you so much for your help!

It sounds like worms to be honest. He's probably been scratching and has made it infected. I would de-worm him, then go to the GP.

Don't know if this helps but my dd had fungal nappy rash at 8 weeks spotted by the health visitor (which i just thought was newborn sensitive skin - what a crap mum!). The CAnesten did take a few days to work but it did clear up after a week - i think the instructions said to apply it for two weeks?

My ds was only 9 months old at the time but he was diagnosed with thrush when it looked like just nappy rash tbh. The canesten did work, and did stop the itching. It might be worth waking him up several times a night to put it on as the itching will drive him mad. My ds was also prescribed antibiotics, so it might be worth a return trip, especially if he is in pain

Oh wow worms??!!! I hadn't even thought of that. I will go to the chemist tomorrow, as a precaution, and give him a de-worming treatment.

So Canestan can take a little while eh? OK I will give him the worm treatment and keep going with the Canestan and see how we go! If not luck I'll take him back to the GP in a few days.

Poor little thing!

Thank you for your help!!!

Worms would be itchy at night, there may be a cream powdery residue in his pants. You have to treat the whole family. If he's been scratching because of the worms then he'd have made himself sore.

Ds gets this, itchy red rash that breaks down, much less so now he is out of nappies. We were prescibed Timodene, which is anti fungal, soothing but also has a little hydrocortisone in it as they felt the rash irritated his eczema
