most worrying bit is bit of overlapping skin just before where nail begins has lifted so you can go underneath as such and go to where nail starts from foot even further

not outside edge - but edge attached to foot

so the bit where nail often has white bit ...skin lifted from it

hard to explain

what shall i do?

Poor little sausage I'd go to A&E or my out of hours doctor myself, it sounds nasty.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/04/2009 20:28

take her/him to A&E, it sounds like a nail bed injury so needs looking at.

Poor thing Give him/her a dose of ibuprofen now as it will be really painful.

bumbly · 26/04/2009 20:34

it is the Eponychium that is lifiting - the cuticle - but only a bit

should i worry?

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/04/2009 20:36

I'd take it and get it checked to be honest. The nail bed is right at the base of the nail.

bumbly · 26/04/2009 22:14

meaning?...

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/04/2009 22:18

A repair of the nail bed is a surgical thing, meaning theatre. It's just below the cuticle at the bottom of the nail, under the skin. If the nail is up/off then it needs checking. It's possible that she/she has a broken toe if she/he has smacked her/his toe with so much force that the nail has come off. This is what I mean in the truthful and blunt post that I didn't say earlier.

bumbly · 26/04/2009 22:33

thanks fluffy

ok nail seems attached but is cuticle that has risen

no bruise which is odd

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/04/2009 22:36

Seriously, I've seen some nasty fractures on patients who have done this. Bruising is just bleeding under the skin so doesn't always indicate a fracture. I really would get it checked. Your little one must have really whacked it. The nail bed is fragile, it doesn't take alot to break it.

bumbly · 27/04/2009 13:30

shall i post a picture?

OP posts:
TBCoalman · 27/04/2009 13:32

Go to A&E. Injury to nailbed can lead to horrible infection. Can you get there easily?

bumbly · 27/04/2009 13:44

a and e have turned me dowen in past with baby crying and diarrhoea and huge fall to forehead on road - so wont go there!

toe looks perfectly normal from outside it is just cuticle that has detached form nail

nail not detached

OP posts:
bumbly · 27/04/2009 14:27

ilovetochat · 27/04/2009 14:29

honestly i think you should take him to walk in medical centre or docs at least. i would go to a+e.

bumbly · 27/04/2009 14:40

and fluffy your opinion after lookng at pic?

OP posts:
ilovetochat · 27/04/2009 14:48

bumbly, are you ok? everyone seems to have advised to go to a and e.

luvaduck · 27/04/2009 14:55

nail bed injuries nees to be seen
at least see your GP say you are worried abot nailbed injuries and that you have heard they need to be seen in hospital, so you should geta referral.

do not leave it

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 27/04/2009 16:59

That needs looking at. The big toe's definately swollen, the nail bed needs looking at. I'm still advising you take the mite to A&E so they can have a poke. Still dose him with ibuprofen as it's gona hurt.

bumbly · 27/04/2009 17:21

sweetie, NHS can not see your child's foot through the telephone line. If he has broken his toe or needs surgery to repair his nail bed it's really not a good thing to leave it like this. It's going to be so very painful for him. Small children react to pain in many different ways. If you don't have access to a car then ask a neighbour/relative or call an ambulance if all else fails. The ambulance services have been called out for much worse then this so don't think you are wasting their time. What about a taxi?

bumbly · 29/04/2009 13:20

gp said looked fine and hardly blinked though little one still refuses shoes

anyone so depressed now got even more probs
