Cold sores or impetigo or bad cold plus teething rash in 6 month old?

Ds has had a bit of a manky face for a few days now, but I was putting it down to bad cold plus teething rash, until a friend asked today if he was getting over chickenpox, which made me think that maybe he's a bit worse than I'd been thinking.

Bit of background in case it's relevant..
3 weeks ago dd had slapped cheek. Rash appeared on a friday. Sunday night ds became ill, and spent nearly a week with fever, almost dehydration, buckets of saliva pouring out, and vast quantities of runny snot. All of this fits slapped cheek, but he never got a rash or red cheeks, so I'm not sure whether it could have been or not.
Since getting over this ds has had hideous cold. He wakes in the morning with his nose totally crusted over by dried up snot, and then thick yellow/white snot pours out for a while when he is first up.
dd had a cold sore on her mouth which first appeared a couple of weeks ago, after her lips went all dry and manky from the slapped cheek.
I got a cold sore a week or so ago.

So, bearing in mind all of that, can you take a look at this pic and tell me which of my 3 contenders you think it's most likely to be?

Thanks

it looks like impetigo here

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 25/04/2009 21:01

Looks like impetigo to me. Get the doctor to have a look.

Thanks ladies. The more I read about impetigo the more I think that you are right. Will take him to the GP on Monday.

I hope he's feeling better soon.

Ok - Flame has referred me here on the basis that I seem to be experienced in all things herpes (well except genital!)

What lesions are we looking at - the ones on the chin - I think this looks like teething rash.

On the nose I would say probably impetigo but I wouldn't rule out herpes - especially as he has had contact with the herpes.

Herpes tends to come up as clear clusters of blisters (exactly like a coldsore) which then merge into one. They then crust, I think they can be yellow when they crust.

The thing is a primary herpes infection (which I assume this is) is usually preceeded by a very high fever (39+) - but am I right in thinking your DS's fever was more than 3days before appearance of blisters? and very swollen glands (neck and abdo). Typically it presents as an oral infection leading to ulceration of the mouth. But TBH I think that is because the mucous membranes of the mouth are a point of access for the virus. If he had a sore/cracked nose it could have got in there.

TBH at this stage it is probably worth seeing a GP to rule out/treat impetigo if necessary. If it is coldsores/herpes it is too late for treatment and TBH (although he has been ill with potential slapped cheek) he actually sounds as though he has gotten off lightly IME

Thanks SMS. Yes, fever (mostly 38.7) was more than 3 days before blisters, and there were no noticeable swollen glands (well, there were noticeably swollen glands in dh, as we seem to have sharing assorted bugs between us all recently, but not in ds!).
I think that impetigo is probably the most likely.

Like I say it is too late to treat for coldsores - they have to be treated within first 24hrs (48hrs max). TBH if he is not suffering it will sort itself (although obviously he will always get coldsores).

If it is impetigo it needs ABs I think. See your GP on Monday is best I think.

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/04/2009 09:23

Just thought I'd let you know that he got ABs for impetigo from GP yesterday.

Thanks ladies.
