just not sure where to go with this one.

Ds1 is 5.5yr old and had a temp last night, so we gave some calpol and it settled down.
This am he got up and vomited.

He seemed alot better until about an hour ago when he dropped off to sleep on sofa.
now he has a temp of 99.5 and is restless and his tummy hurts.

Calpol or no calpol?
i think he may well vomit whatever, i jsut don't want to make it any worse ofr him if calpol may be irritating his stomach.

WWYD?

I'd give the calpol on the basis that even getting him to keep a bit down might help reduce the temperature.

Ewe · 24/04/2009 12:52

I probably would in the hope that syringed in slowly some of it/enough might stay down.

If not, have you stripped his clothes and dabbed with tepid flannel? His temp needs to come down which is the most important thing IMO.

misdee · 24/04/2009 12:52

give him the calpol.

VinegarTitsThePorker · 24/04/2009 12:53

What puppy said, hope he gets better soon

popsycal · 24/04/2009 12:53

he's asleep again.

poor boy.

i don't think he'd cope with the water thing- is a bit OCD about getting wet

thanks for replies.

I will wait for a bit and then give him calopol when he wakes.
Currently doing glitter pics with ds2 who is squitting, but no temp.

I wouldn't give the calpol - if he's being sick, it might upset his stomach even more. Second the damp flannel - even while he's alseep would help. Forehead or back of neck would be ideal.

VinegarTitsThePorker · 24/04/2009 13:50

Keep giving him fluids if he is being sick though, or he will dehydrate, even if he brings it back up he may keep some of it down at least

VinegarTitsThePorker · 24/04/2009 13:52

also a luke warm bath will bring his temp down too, if you can get him to sit in it for a while, his temp will drop and he may even feel a little better

sunandmoon · 24/04/2009 13:56

Poor him and poor you!
Make sure he drinks plenty of fluids, it is important when they have temperature and also after vomitting! And read properly the instructions about giving him Calpol or any other medicines, we tend to give children the wrong doses!

FrankMustard · 24/04/2009 13:59

Medical advice if he has a temp is to give calpol - far more important to try and bring temp down than prevent sickness. Just be aware that he might throw it up and if so, don't give more til next dose time.
Keep fluid intake and if he's being very sick or has diahorroea too over several days try and encourage few sips of dioralyte.
Make sure he deosn't gulp water down even if he's thirsty as he will throw up right away if so (I've had experience of this!) and when you've given the calpol, keep him calm and relaxed to prevent chance of throwing it up. If he's sick, he probably would have been anyway, but it is important to address the fever.
I wouldn't recommend the tepid water - this can cool a child off TOO quickly which is not good for them. They shouldn't be made cold in order to reduce a temp, so opening a window and havig him in light clothing (vest and pj bottoms etc -anything he's comfy in but not too many clothes) will be enough
Good luck.

FrankMustard · 24/04/2009 14:02

Sorry, I also meant to say I@m not a doc but the reason I said about "medical advice" is that I was in similar position not long ago and asked about the tepid water thing and was told not to by gp as it's too easy to make the water too cool. Less traumatic for a 5yr old to just sit quietly in bed, in light clothing and have calpol!

oopsagain · 24/04/2009 15:20

thanks everyone.
I gave him calpol and he's alot better. No sickness just now.

But his brother has done a fantastic liquid poo in his potty
