Is this par for the course when children start school or is it something I should be worried about?
The bugs seem to linger despite me switching to a plain diet with no dairy and he often has to take a week off, which makes me worry that the school are going to start to question all the time he has off.

It may seem crazy but do you have a decent water supply? I ask this as ours is from a spring and has unacceptable levels of e-Coli, cryptosporidium etc.

I hope your ds feels better soon.Have you spoken to your GP about it?

This happened to us last year and I'm now convinced it was the same bug which kept reoccuring.

This year I have kept a bottle of disinfectant spray in both bathrooms and if anyone has a bug the entire place gets sprayed (including light switches, door handles, taps etc.)

I have also introduced more rigourous hand washing before meals.

Touch wood, seems to have worked so far. DC have only had a few bugs between them (DS more than DD, but then he's younger) Myself & DP have had none - (as an emetophobe, that is a huge relief to me)

Might be worth asking your gp for a stool test though, if you think it may be something other than a virus

My ds3 is in reception and has had 3 bugs since Sept which is unlike him as he is usually very reiliant. Some of the children aren't so great at hand washing (inc ,my own son for a while so possibly it's the same in your ds's class and every time a bug goes round it's being passed around like wildfire due to hands not being washed properly. Maybe speak to the teacher about it and check they're being supervised.
Aside from that, if you're concerned I would go to your gp and ask them to take a stool sample to check it's not a bug that'sstill affecting him and keeps reappearing.

IMHO children just go through spells like this. Sometimes we go through bugs a plenty for what seems like months and then it goes quiet. Every year someone in our family seemed to be ill from October to March......this last spell has been much better and I like to think we are building some immunity!! You could also try a spell of good probiotics to get the gut in top shape. Get advice from a herbalist maybe as I'm not sure if the supermarket Yakult things contain enough to help......

FrankMustard · 24/04/2009 14:35

A bit of live yoghurt will help the gut flora if you want to try it. Wwere you advised to cut out dairy for any particular reason frazzle?

My son was having what i thought were re-occuring stomach bugs. The head teacher mnentioned the amount of time he was having off school so i thought this is enough!

Went to gp who referred us to the peads..he has abdominal migraine and was put on medication. He gets them a lot less now, but he is off to school today after he starting being sick from 5am today.

Is there a family history of migraine (headaches)?

DS symptoms are going very pale(almost green)...floppy, bad tummy ache, clammy and sleepy and then the vomiting starts. He usually had flashing light disturbances a couple of days before the attack but hasn't this time so i am suspicious of the strawberries he had yesterday for starting this.

Hope your DS will be ok.

I only cut out dairy when a bug appears not all the time, sorry if that wasn't clear.

The water supply was tested a couple of years ago and all was fine.

I have 2 younger children but they have only had 3 bugs between them in the same period.

He's lay on the sofa at the moment and has hardly kept any fluid down today so far.

IDBIF I don't think my DS symptoms match your sons, the vomiting usually begins in the middle of the night after being slow to eat that nights tea.

He can have an attack at anytime..the middle of the night ones are the worst eh!

His is mainly down to excitement/stress. If a friend is due to come over and play he will get so excited he will have an attack. Or if there is a party/football tournament to look forward to..he gets one!
