14 month old with 39.6 degrees temperature and very red face

My dd was very hot this morning when I got her out of her cot, but seemed ok. She has been eating and drinking normally but is listless, clingy and sleeping lots. Not crying though. Her face is very red. Just checked her temp in her ear and it is 39.6 degrees. She had had calpol an hour before so it may have been higher than that. Should I be worried? She is now in bed.

could it be slapped cheek? Are her cheeks very red? if the calpol doesn't bring the temp down I would get her checked out.

Oodle · 23/04/2009 19:22

Yes, it could be, but it's not really a rash - and the redness is over her whole face - forehead, nose etc. Does that sound like slapped cheek? Is 39.6 very high? Thanks!

I'd be inclined to give some ibuprofen as well to control the temp (I often find calpol on its own if not enough) and then see what she looks like tomorrow.

She is asleep now - should I wake her up to give her ibuprofen or give her some if she wakes up in the night? And I've read conflicting advice about what they should wear when they have a fever - she normally has pjs and a sleeping bag to sleep in but she's just in a long sleeve vest with a couple of light blankets - does that sound OK? Thanks for your help.

yes 39.6 is quite high. Anything over 40 needs to come down pretty quick. You could try ibuprofen before taking her to doc but combined with rash i'd want to get her checked.

Oodle · 23/04/2009 19:34

Thanks Ruty do you think I should go to the hospital tonight or wait till the morning to see the doctor?

have you got any baby ibuprofen? Can you ring the out of hours gp for advice?

ruty · 23/04/2009 19:36

I'd keep her in a vest but take the blankets off. I think the latest advice is not to strip them, keep them in a vest but a sheet is enough not blankets.

andiem · 23/04/2009 19:36

oddle I would leave her to sleep and then give her some ibuprofen when she wakes
if she still has the temp tomorrow or gets worse in the night I would get her seen
slapped cheek looks like this

ruty · 23/04/2009 19:37

if you are worried about her take her in, they won't mind. If you want to wait and see, just check her temp doesn't go over 40. If her temp is not going down I'd wake her up to give her the baby ibuprofen.

I have taken mine to the hospital with temps like that with details of how much calpol/ibuprofen I gave them and when. They weighed the kids and then gave them much larger doses of meds than I had which bought their temps down pretty quick so as to avoid a possible febrile convulsion.

If you are worried it is better to take her up to A&E and get her checked out than to sit by the bed/cot fretting all night.

Thanks so much everyone. Will do as you say. And thanks for pic andiem - her face doesn't really look like that - it is just sort of a smooth (not mottled) red all over. But suppose it could still be slapped cheek. Just managed to take her temp again while she was asleep - now 39.3 - but that is after calpol and the window is open in her room so quite chilly in there.
