RED FACES AND STRAINING BUT NO POO!!!

My 9 mo DS has always gone a little red in the face at poo time but over the last 2 days he's almost purple and no poo comes out. He did manage to go yesterday but none today after a difficult night with thrushy bum and teething. Typical diet, porridge, organic apple and apricot cereal or weetabix for breakfast. Fish pie, veg sheperds, or pasta and spinach followed by fromage frais for lunch. Corn chowder or a soup for tea. Doesn't take mounds of milk anymore since stopping bf 3 weeks ago, perhaps 450-500ml a day of Hipp Organic and a full Tommee Tippee cup of water. Doesn't take fruit too easily and perhaps needs to drink more? I'm at a loss. HELP?

His diet looks good on fibre, the only thing is that weetabix would make my DS a bit constipated at this age. No idea why- maybe try cutting this out. Just keep offering lots of water. What fruits have you tried- my DS absolutely adored Galia Melon. Maybe try that? Also, prunes. They are the bees knees at loosening up motions if he is constipated.

hi again gilly

I agree prunes or prune juice are great for dealing with constipation. Also, if most of the veg he has is cooked, perhaps you could give him some raw carrot, cucumber sticks or pieces of apple at various points in the day to play around with and maybe munch on? If he's teething he will probably enjoy the feeling in his mouth in any case. And I find ds3 loves munching on florets broccoli or cauliflower (cooked). I do try to limit them as his poo gets too loose (and smelly) but if your little one is straining you could try them - might not help with the nappy rash though

Were you in the July 2008 antenatal group (here on mumsnet)? I think I recognise the name. ds3 was born in June after all but I have hardly visited either postnatal threads as the three boys keep me pretty busy. I just pop in now and again.

Hope things get better for your little one soon.

Hey mummypig yes I was on the July thread but like you, don't seem to find the time to get on there, all a bit cliquey too sometimes! Thanks for the advice, I'll try the prunes and persevere with offering veg, usually ends up on the floor but will go in his mouth eventually!

Thats an interesting theory re Weetabix.
My 11month dd has had Weetabix on both Monday and Tuesday this week and has been able to perform but has struggled.
She had porridge today and hasnt has the same problem.

Thanks for the lightbulb moment ladies
