Does anyone know if the GP's will do this for me?

DD is poorly, and has quite a high temperature, with a bad hacking cough, snotty nose etc. I am down to my last dregs of Calpol and DH and I have absolutely no cash to buy any more for her

DD has been prescribed infant Paracetamol from the GP's before. She has never had it on a repeat prescription though.

If I ring and explain the situation do you think I would be able to get a repeat prescription for some for her? Or am I just being too cheeky to consider it?

No, you're not being cheeky, that's what the NHS is for, you've paid your tax and NI so now your DD is entitled to a bit of Calpol. Phone them and ask and be assertive- I have a feeling they may ask you to take her in for an appointment though, they usually do with babies and children.

Thanks supercherry, DD does have an appointment for Friday anyway but I have just gotten off the phone form the receptionist. I explained that DD is worse now and quite poorly and I chickened out asking about the calpol but asked if it was possible for her to see a doctor today. She told me they have no appointments but she will wait for the doctor to arrive and ask if he/she can squeeze DD in.

But TBH I may take a walk up there anyway and go see my mum as she lives not far from the doctors so then I can get there as soon as they say.

you can go in to the chemist and get calpol on the 'little system to get some meds'
I'm sorry I dont know what its called
maybe emas

cluelessnchaos · 21/04/2009 08:22

i heard about this system, you register as having children and anything that can be on prescription you get for free direct from the chemist, I think the gp would def do it for you.

insertwittynicknameHERE · 21/04/2009 08:27

ooh that system sounds good, where can I find out about it? Would be handy with us having a Sainburys up the road with a chemist. I am not keen on getting DD out of bed now and trudging half way across town in my impregnated state. But needs must.

i know we have that system - cant for the life of me remember what it is called though ---- oh, i think it is the 'minor ailments scheme'. Your just fill a form in at chemist, simple as that really. I used to get all DD's head lice treatments that way - saved the embarrassment of going to the GP!!

Good for painkillers, thrush stuff etc.

ishetellingthetruth · 21/04/2009 20:42

What system is this? I've never heard of it?!!!

Can anyone tell me more?

nymphadora · 21/04/2009 21:00

Do all areas do this?

heather1980 · 21/04/2009 21:15

it's called either 'care at the chemist' or 'minor ailment scheme'.
i work in a pharmacy and we do it, you can get stuff like calpol, cough medicine, thrush cream, nit treatments etc.
to use it you must have the same exemptions as a prescription, such as being under 16, on benefits, pregnant etc.
hth

I haven't seen it advertised anywhere , I have been putting in repeat perscriptions at drs for nit stuff and calpol etc for years
