Dd1 has had nits on and off for 2 months, i comb her hair with a nit comb 3 times a week, i have been using the nitty gritty spray before school, i have used 2 different nit shampoos and used them on all of us (me,dh and both dd's). We are on holiday this week (arived today), again dd is riddled in nits and i have found a couple on me, we have both used 'full marks' a few hours ago but i am still combing out live lice . Shampooing dd has been a nightmare as she has Aspergers, hates water and we only have a shower in our acomidation.

How can i get rid of them?

Oh gosh, poor you!

Are you washing the bedding and things? Have you tried the one that you leave overnight and it smothers them? (rather than pesticide, I mean?)

MarsLady · 20/04/2009 20:56

Hedrin! Fantastic stuff.

Ivykaty44 · 20/04/2009 20:56

olive oil - it was the only way I could get rid of nits in dd1's hair and I would leave the olive oil in over night.

It is surprisingly easy to wash out aswell, when I first read about it I thought it would be really difficult but it was easy to shampoo and left her hair in great condition.

Put the oil on the hair and leave in for 4-5 hours or over night, then comb the hair with a nit comb and stand near a sink to do this and run the comb under the tap and then comb again.

The oil cloggs the gills of the nits up and they fall alseep/coma type state.

wash hair with a good tea tree shampoo and then dry the hair or leave to dry.

Repeat every 4-5 days for at least 4 weeks.

we have same problem here, we are clear for about a week and during school holidays and then she goes back and she get them again
Do you have a nitty gritty comb? Its the only one I know that works for us.

Washed all bedding when at home. Tried 'full marks' and 'lyclear', washed her hair in t-tree shampoo and sprayed with 'nitty gritty', i have used 'full marks' twice in half term, she hasn't been near another child for 2 weeks yet they have still returned (or not been killed by the first treatment), luckily i'm in holiday in the UK so i will try to go to boots tomorrow but i'm not sure if she will let me shower her again until we get home (where i can bath her), we are only here for 5 days so i might just have to comb her each day until we get home. Is Hedrin the one you leeve in over night?

Hedrin was the one I was going for, thanks Marslady,

The nitty gritty comb is also great.

ButtercupWafflehead · 20/04/2009 21:05

Yes you leave it in overnight, and instead of killing them off with poison (which they are allegedly becoming immune to), it suffocates them. You have to repeat in so many days, to catch the next batch who will have just hatched.

I think Hedrin make more than one type so have a chat to the pharmacist!

Good luck! it's so awful, isn't it?

Marne · 20/04/2009 21:07

We have a nitty gritty comb but i find it hard to use on it on dd as she says it hurts and scream ,i havn't got one with me but it might be worth getting one from boots tomorow and some Hedrin for the day we get home.

Poor dd was so upset, we are going to a zoo tomorrow and she thought she would pass them on to the monkeys .

Oh you too. We treated with full marks twice over the Easter break and I was combing out live lice the next day.
What a pain it is.
I used hedrin on the younger two DDs and it seemed to work but doesn't kill eggs so you have to treat and comb again. and again and again.......
I also washed all bedding.....
Gah!

skinnygirlNOT · 20/04/2009 22:28

I used neat Tea Tree oil (about 5 drops) mixed in conditioner. Smothered this all over dd's hair and left it on for half an hour under a shower cap. Then before rinsing I used a nit comb.

I swear by this (or Hedrin for an easy quick fix). It always gets the live (brown) eggs out too- I think it dissolves the 'glue' that sticks them to the hair shaft.

Repeat every other day for 7 days.

FlyMeToDunoon · 21/04/2009 08:46

"repeat every other day for 7 days"

Aaaaaargh!

skinnygirlNOT · 22/04/2009 18:56

But that's only three times, and it gets the live eggs out!!

Much cheaper than Hedrin and a small bottle of tea tree oil will last ages, plus you will already have it next time

I've just treated dd3 with a combing method. She is only two so there was no way I was going to cover her head with full marks etc. The nitty gritty comb is marvellous - did two really good combing sessions two days apart to start - with a tea tree cnditioner on and she has been clear since.
