Puberty - how early??

DD is 8, and I've just noticed pretty obvious breast buds ( that I hadn't noticed before)

Is this normal? I'm reading things saying yes perfectly normal, to no not normal go to Dr.
So thought it best to ask here
If your DD's have gone through it when did they start developing?
Do I need to take her to the GP?
I'm fairly sure I didn't start getting breasts until 10/11 ish.

Thanks

I seem to remember that it depends upon their weight/BMI - body fat brings on puberty so if she's a skinny minny then it may be worth checking it out as it's unusually early (if you see what I mean - not trying to suggest she's overweight!). In any case, if you're worried I would go to the GP to have a chat.

My step dd started about that age.Did get recommended to hosp but then told that would start early with all including monthlies. She did.
Started them in p6 and her mum had to contact school to say as needed out to loo more often.
She is now a very grown up,developed 14 yr old with no problems

PlumBumMum · 19/04/2009 16:24

My dd is 8 too, and I thought I noticed this a few weeks ago, wasn't sure seither it was what she was wearing, I'm not concerned at all

UndertheBoredwalk · 19/04/2009 16:27

She's tiny and weighs next to nothing! lol She's by far the smallest child in her class, not sure what to make of that!
I may leave it see if anything else develops?
Definitely wasn't expecting this for at least another year!

My DD has been going through the start of puberty since she was 7, she's now 9

We noticed lumpy breasts at 7, and took her to the Gp, who said it was her breasts starting to bud, but as a precaution he referred her to the local hospital to see an Endrincologist(sp), as she was going into puberty early.

Consultant at the hospital monitored her for just over a year, and then discharged her as once they pass 8 years old, they are happy for nature to take it's course and let the girls start puberty when their bodies say they should.

Dd's breast are slightly more noticable, but only still budding, she has daily baths, and wears deoderant, her hair gets very greasy very quickly and she has become slightly spotty. Also her body is filling out around her hips, tummy. She's very tall and slim, and you can see her 'rounding' out in a more 'womanly' way.

Emotionally she has regular patterns of very slight PMT, bless her and she takes evening primrose to help with that.

I've also had the 'talk' with her, and have explained in depth about puberty, periods etc.

Ive also given her a couple of wrapped panty liners to hide in her school bag, as she's now getting regular monthly bellyaches and headaches, to be honest I don't think it will be long before her periods start, and I don't want her worrying about having to go to the school medical room for sanitary wear.

As for the being 7st before starting your periods, I didn't reach 7st until I was 20 years old, and I started my periods at 10 1/2 years old, so personally I think thats a bit of a myth.

So sorry to waffle on, but I remember how worrying it was when I first noticed lumpiness in Dd's Breasts, and worried all weekend till I could get her to the Doc's on the Monday, so wanted to reassure you abit.

Thanks for your post moonmother.
Makes me feel much better. Would be waste of time bothering the GP then it sounds. Given that she is 8, if that's their 'cut-off' point.
Shall just sit back and see then.
Feel so sorry for her, she's so young!

I started breast-budding at about 8 - I recall thinking with horror that what my friend had told me about swallowing chewing gum (that it sticks to your ribs!) was true! I was, btw, small and skinny, and I started my periods in P7 at 11.

So glad i read this post..my daughter is just 9 has started developing breasts and a few strand of pubic hair and hair under her arms, thought i was seeing things at first!! The thing im worried about is explaining puberty to her, because she has global learning delay she is more like a 5-6 year old mentally, will have to try and find a really simple book with lots of pictures so we can sit down together and go through it

BehindLockNumberNine · 11/04/2011 18:38

They could well disappear again.

Dd (tall but very skinny) first had one breastbud at age 7 years 9 months. She complained it felt sore. I panicked and read up on everything I could find. Made an appt with the GP but a few days later (and before the appt) the buds had disappeared.
This happened again at age 7 years 11 months. But this time it was both nipples. This time the buds stayed put for nearly 2 weeks. (I did not phone the GP this time, kept thinking they will go, and luckily they did.)

Dd is now 8 years 4 months and we have not seen any buds for 5 months.

I think the previous brief appearances of the buds was due to a surge of hormones - a bit like her body preparing for puberty but only practising.

NHS website very good for this sort of thing.

Dniece started breast bud and pubic hair at 8 and only just started period at 12! Still only buds too and she is gutted:0) all girls school!

I don't think you would be wasting your GPs time...in fact it might be worth going to have a word with them (with or without your DD)...my practice do telephone consultations for general advice...

My DD1 got pubic hair at just over 6 yo...I was horrified. I took her to the GP apparently in her case at least it could have been a symptom of a (rare) type of cancer so she was referred to hospital and had scans/blood tests etc - they concluded it was part of a growth spurt (adrenal related).
I was told she would likely be an early developer anyway...Now just 10 yo - over the years she is obviously developing but is seems to be going slowly - she has breast buds, few strands of underarm air, more pubic hair, gets smelly, greasy hair, moody as hell...
NHS direct also sent me some leaflets etc for her - as well as me talking to her - so it was all to be expected..
My initial reaction was the worst - she said her bottom was itchy and showed me - it was such a shock...she was just so young...and I felt so sad...(damaged her for life probably Blush )

I was at school with a girl who had breasts aged 9 and had begun menstruating - poor soul.
