Yes, I could search the archives, but... chicken pox....

DD has got chicken pox. She seems okay with it at the minute. She came out in spots yesterday.
She doesn't have many spots, a few on her belly/back, the odd one here and there on her neck, a couple on her bum. But not many. I thought she'd wake up with more this morning, but she hasn't.
Is it possible to have a "mild" case of CP? The girl she got it from had hardly any spots either.
Would a mild case mean that she could get it again later?
Or do the spots take days to come out and tomorrow I'll be able to do dot to dot on her?
Thanks!

i think you can get a'mild' case yes.
but on the other hand i seem to remember it took a few days before dd got all her spots so its possible she could get more spots yet

rubyslippers · 19/04/2009 09:59

yes - you can have it mildly

DS started with about 5 spots on his neck/back and then 2 days later was covered head to foot

if you have it mildly, it is possible to get it again

You can def get a mild case....that is what dd had last year.

What I don't know is whether it still gives you immunity if it is mild...perhaps someone will be along to tell us soon.

DD was 2, and I have heard the younger they are the milder it is. I had it when I was about 7/7 and in my memory I was a lot worse than dd seem to be. Or maybe I was just a wimp!

You can get a mild case yes, and sometimes if you dont get immunity from it then you can get it again.

My DD had a reasonably mild case - about 150 spots. I think the avg is about 300. Apparently it is possible to get it again if you do have a very mild dose. Those I've heard about involved only a handful of spots in the first exposure. So you should be ok.

We found cool baths in Bicarb of Soda, Eurax lotion and calamine cream helped when the spots got itchy.

Hope she gets better quickly.

She doesn't seem too bothered at all by them, she has one on her finger which seems to be hurting, but she's sat watching telly and seems unfazed.

The girl she got it from had about 30 spots in total (there was an outbreak at the school) and the cm had said she'd never seen a child with so few spots.

I've cut dd's nails down as far as possible, am going to get some lotions today.

One question - I know that sometimes chicken pox can give somebody shingles, am I right in thinking thats only in run down / immune deficient people? Am I okay taking her out and about?

It doesn't give you shingles. You have to have had exposure to the chicken pox virus to develop shingles at a later stage. The virus remains dormant and is activated for some reason.

However, young babies, pregnant women who have not had the virus do not want to be exposed to it, so I decided to keep my DD under quarantine.

Luckily the cm is on holiday and she's not due back there until next Monday, so this week she's going to be at my mums, and not out anywhere.

She was out at the zoo / the park / shops last week, I wonder how many other children she has potentially infected!

Oddly, dd has been "exposed" four times and never had it until this round at the cm's house, which I always found strange as she's the only full timer there.

It's a weird thing. My DD2 (then about 8 months old) didn't get it from her 3 year old sister. But DD1 did manage to pass it on to her two cousins. I was still BFing DD2 a bit and I did wonder if I was still giving her immunity.
