& i just wondered what to expect afterwards. How will she be, how long before she starts feeling better? I have been told she needs 10-14 days at home aferwards, was that your experience? TIA

Hi, dd was 9 when she had this op two years ago. She was absolutely fine, playing with some friends in the children's ward from about an hour after the anaesthetic wore off. She was discharged the next morning, and had a week off school in total, spent in lying on sofa being waited on hand on foot, milking every moment !
It was much more strightforward that I had anticipated, and she was right as rain to return to school after the week, although iirc she was excused gym lessons for a further week just in case of collisions, etc, but this was purely precautionary.

Wishing your dd a speedy recovery x

Thanks SilkyDemon, that doesn't sound too bad. Was getting myself into a bit of a tiz about it!! Dd is also 9. She has been told she will be in and out the same day!! Tbh though, I am quite pleased about that. Sure my dd will milk it just as much as yours!!! She has already got her grandparents promising her presents, ice cream and all sorts !!

I had mine out when I was 8. it bloody hurts! lol
but it was ok I guess. I was in hospital for a couple of days, then off school for 2 weeks.
I think the no PE and stuff is in case of haemorrhaging (but that's very rare so don't worry!!!)

do not underestimate how painful it can be to swallow afterwards, I can still remember it now. but do encourage her to eat scratchy foods (toast etc) as that cleans the wound.

hope it all goes ok for her

I had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was 10 (in 1982) and was in for 3 days, and felt very frightened and alone as in those days parents didn't stay with kids in hospital. Also had to run my own bath which scared the bejusus out of me as I was convinced I'd scald myself to death! The pain afterwards was phenomenal and I wasn't aloud out of the house for one week and off school for 6 but I'm sure the world has moved on a lot since then.

reikizen · 18/04/2009 16:42

oops, that 6 weeks off school obviously affected my spelling for life. I mean, allowed, not aloud...

Bomper · 18/04/2009 16:44

What should I for the first few nights afterwards? Will the pain keep her up? Should I have her in with me?

There should be an 'expect' in there!!! Sorry!!

i wouldn't have thought the pain would keep her up. regular painkillers ought to do the trick if it hurts.
it mainly hurts when you have to swallow

dd had them out in January, but she's only 2. The pain varies from child to child - some bounce back pretty easily, some have a lot of pain. dd did have a lot of pain, and the most important tip I was given by all here and in the hospital was to always stay on top of pain relief - ie give them just before the time limit is up. If the pain gets on top, its harder to get back under control.

dd had Voltarol and paracetamol round the clock for over a week...then she was much better, very fast. By 10 days she just had a slightly sore throat when dry or when eating (keep well hydrated, helps a lot - even if it means sucking ice lollies) and by 14 days it was a thing of the past, though still a bit tired.

Others have been able to stop painkillers after a week - it really does vary.

Rough foods like toast and crisps are recommended post-op, nowadays, as they help the healing process...and don't worry if she eats almost nothing for a few days: important thing is fluids, any weight loss will soon be regained!
