DD has a bug and is lifeless...

notoverit · 18/04/2009 10:11

DD has a sicky bug and was throwing up, she has not been sick from around 6pm last night, but now she is just lifeless.

She is not really hungry but does sometimes ask for food then doesn't bother with it. What would you feed her if she is hungry? Also she is not drinking much but I keep offering drinks.

Any advice welcome. I just hate to see her so lifeless....

How old is she? Children can be great at just 'switching off' and getting better because they see no need to put a brave face on things like adults (not men obviously!)I'd feed her ehatever she will eat, toast, jelly, whatever but just a small amount and an ice lolly/ice pop might make her drink more. Does she havea temp? Any rash?

Doodle2U · 18/04/2009 10:16

How old is she?

Is she pale?

Has she complained of or seemed to display any stiffness in her neck or shoulders?

Has she got a temp?

Drinks are the most important thing. She can survive a while without food but she must drink. If she doesn't, you need to get her seen by emergency GP.

Phone NHS Direct if you're unsure.

notoverit · 18/04/2009 10:35

She is 21months, she is pale you can see she is not well. I'm going to go and get ice poles later when my mum can come and sit with dd, but she normally doesnt eat them, but worth a try.

She has got a temp, it was 38.8 last night but its 37 now. I called the emergency docs and they just told me things I already new, but said she could drink milk, but I'm sure that makes the bug worse as have been told this before?

At the moment she is eating dry cheeros...

Right, 21 months and pale/lethargic. I'd be considering taking her in to A&E now TBH.

I don't mess about with "not wanting to take up the dr's time etc" - because my DD ended up with meningitis and if I'd left it much longer, she would have died. Better to be scolded for wasting time than taking a chance.

Does she eat yogurt/jelly or icecream? All liquid based.

Milk - I was told no if they had an upset tummy. May have changed now though - I'm going back 6 or 7 years.

notoverit · 18/04/2009 15:55

doodle - I'm have ust called the doctors to tell them I am bringing her over for an appointment, as it has been two days now.

What was your dd's symptoms? my dd has not got a rash...

OP posts:
Doodle2U · 18/04/2009 16:34

Not all cases of meningitis have a rash. There are loads of strains and variations. My daughter had pneumococcal meningitis (forgive spelling) - so no rash.

She was pale, lethargic and had stopped taking fluids. Once 2 hours had passed and I couldn't get fluids any where near her, I went to the GP. GP took one look at her as I was walking across his office to sit down next to his desk and he said "I'm not happy with her!"

That was it - sent straight to childrens hospital and we were in for 7 days.

So never, ever piss about when they go pale & lethargic and stop fluids. EVER!

Good luck and I hope it's no more than a wee bug that will sort itself out.

notoverit · 18/04/2009 16:54

Thanks, I'm just leaving now to take her to emergency gp's, I will update you later...

lisad123 · 18/04/2009 20:41

how is she? sounds very poorly, hope shes ok

queenofpuddings · 18/04/2009 21:01

hope shes okay, my daughter had pneumoccoaccal meningitis too, no rash only symptoms were vomiting and lethargy, also in hospital a week.

let us know how you get on

notoverit · 18/04/2009 22:02

I had her checked out and they said it is just a bug thank godness, she was very drained, but the doctor said it is because she is not drinking enough fluids. I am trying all different drinks but she only drinks samll amounts.

He also said I have to give her dioralyte but she wont drink it. So I have been trying to give it to her with a syringe, but she spits it out all over me, she is very strong even when ill.

So I will keep trying as the doctor said if she will not drink fluids she may have to go to hospital, but she does not seem that dehydrated as yet...

Thanks for checking up on us ladies.

OP posts:
hazeyjane · 18/04/2009 22:07

what flavour is the dioralyte? I found that dd1 would only drink one flavour (in fact it might have been the flavourless one), we had to give it to her in a syringe, 5 mls every 15 minutes. We had to do it all night, because they said she would be admitted to hospital, but by morning she had perked up a bit. After that she only wanted to have drinks from a syringe!

Hope she is ok.

Doodle2U · 18/04/2009 22:27

Brilliant news.

I only know of the illegal way to get a child to take dioralyte - sprinkle it into Heinze baby fruit juice - well it worked for us!

Doodle2U · 18/04/2009 22:28

Heinz

notoverit · 19/04/2009 10:06

It is blackcurrant flavour, I have tried it in other drinks but can still taste the salt, and so can dd.

She is still not great today but has been playing a little and moaning more so she seems to have more energy. But she did have really bad belly this morning.

OP posts:
anniebear · 19/04/2009 13:15

thats great

(Doodle, how is your DD now?)

toffeeapple · 19/04/2009 14:18

Hopefully she's okay, my DD had a sickness bug last week and was very lethargic, it's so worrying when they are like that.
She looked pale also, and couldn't be bothered to talk (she's 4 1/2).
I just kept giving her orange squash as she wasn't too keen on that Dioralyte either (although she did have some initially)

Numberfour · 19/04/2009 15:04

notoverit, how is your little one today?

notoverit · 19/04/2009 21:37

still not great, she has had more energy today and has been playing a little. But stioll not drinking much, and my doctor said give her any fluids atall, so I gave her a fruit shoot because my mum gives them to her andsays she loves them, and I got her little bottles of flavoured water.

Now she has started being sick again and I'm sure its the fruit shoot as the sick is pinky purply colour. So I've done the wrong thing.

Also she has started getting really annoyed and screaming and slapping me, so not much fun at the moment.

It has been three whole days now and being a single parent it is getting very draining.

DS1 has had a few really bad sickness bugs recently where he has been constantly sick for about four days, waking up only to throw up and refusing to eat or drink. The dehydration made him pale and lifeless.
In January, he ended up in hospital where we were told to give him diarolyte through a syringe (we were told to flavour it with his favourite squash). BTW Fruit Shoot came straight back up.
Another GP then told us to stop the diarolyte as he was only vomiting and did not have diahorrea (sp?).
The advice is to give small sips little and often. DH's theory is to get as much fluid down as soon as possible because if it doesn't come back immediately at least some will have been absorbed by the time they are sick (and there is something to bring up rather than dry-retching which is horrendous in a small child).
DS was sick again a few weeks ago and this time we just went with it and concentrated on getting the fluids down.
It is horrible and scarey but children do improve very quickly.
However, if she keeps being sick she may need to be prescribed anti-sickness medicine. DS has this and it really helps. We were desperate and felt he needed to keep something down in order to be able to fight the bug.
Hope this helps. I so know how you are feeling. x

notoverit · 19/04/2009 22:34

Thanks for the advice, well she had stopped being sick from fri around 5pm untill this afternoon so i thought she as over the worst of it, I will take her to our normal gp's tomorrow if she still seems bad.

OP posts:
wonderingwondering · 19/04/2009 22:38

Try freezing diarolyte - even giving a few small chips of the ice every 5/10 minutes helps get some fluid in, and it gets absorbed quite well.

notoverit · 19/04/2009 22:46

really, I never thought of that, I will give it a try...
