DD can't keep water down

My dd was sick last week, then had a temp for 3 days and seemed back to normal from Easter Sunday

Today she has started to vomit quite frequently, brings back water also but no temp or diarrhea

she is sick, but small and slight so I'm worried about her becoming dehydrated

is thie the dreaded Norvalk virus? how long before she needs a Dr?

that should be 'she is 6, we know she's sick

Poor lovey. How old is she?

I don't know what the Norvalk virus is - I would have assumed it was a separate illness.

A good way to keep water down is to give her a 5ml teaspoon every 15mins. Or even less but more often.

My dts have just got over a sickness bug, it effected them differently, dt2 suffered the worse, stopped talking, walking and did'nt have a scrap to eat for 5 days, then she bounced back very quickly, it was only less than 24 hours that she could'nt keep water down, unless of course she gulped it down too quickly.

yes, have lemonade, thanks for the tip

Make her some rehydration solution (1 litre water, 8 level teaspoons of sugar, 1 level teaspoon of salt) and give her one teaspoon every 5 minutes - no more as it's most likely to stay down in small amounts.

If she isn't keeping anything down at all by the morning, she prob needs to see someone

PrettyCandles · 15/04/2009 21:35

Cross-posted.

Keep giving her the tiniest sips - 5ml or less - and check when she goes to the toilet. If her wee is yellow, then she's not dehydrated. If she doesn't wee, or if her wee is dark, then she is dehydrated.

also, 24-48 hours after vomiting stops give her actimel, its great for upsets tummies.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/04/2009 21:36

When DS was sick we were advised to try to get a teasponn down every 5-10 minutes, that should hopefully not be enough to make her sick but should keep her hydrated.

Poor you sounds horrible, hope she gets better soon.

yappybluedog · 15/04/2009 21:37

it started very suddenly, she was fine until lunchtime

btw, if the poor cinema attendant who had to clear up after her first bout of vomiting ( halfway through Monsters V Aliens) is reading this, I offer my sincerest apologies

Try flat lemonade.

yappybluedog · 15/04/2009 21:41

thanks all, will try the rehydration solution

try ice lollies too, they take a while to eat so she will get the fluid more slowly and is more likely to keep it down.

yappybluedog · 15/04/2009 21:48

oh yes, ice lollies sound good

she is quite cheerful and alert, just a bit lethargic
