my 10 day old baby has just bumped his head falling out of the sling, A & E or not??

I have one of those wrap sling things and hadn't put him in properly, and somehow he slipped out of the top of it whilst I was doing some multitasking. I managed to move to the nearest high surface which was the gas hob, which was off and cold, but I think his head landed heavily on one of the metal prongy bits. He screamed heartily immediately afterwards, but stopped as soon as I bf him. He seems perfectly normal, red mark on his head, but no bump.
Am I being neurotic or should I just go in to A & E to check??

you're not being neurotic. you can call NHS Direct/24 fir advice or you could take him directly there. you may be seen faster if you go through NHS Direct/24.

MIAeatingeggs · 12/04/2009 19:08

At 10 days old I would go to A&E to check as I wouldn't be able to sleep. But, if you want to be less dramatic, then phone NHS direct and ask them.

luvaduck · 12/04/2009 19:10

you won't be seen faster if you go through nhs direct sadly!
very common thing to see in a+e, don't worry about going (he's prob fine though but can't decide over internet)

luvaduck · 12/04/2009 19:10

what i meant was don't feel you are being neurotic by going

conniedescending · 12/04/2009 19:10

I probably would at 10 days old as well - for peace of mind rather than because I think your baby may be injured.

LilyBolero · 12/04/2009 19:11

I would go, as he's SO little. Be prepared for them to give you the 3rd degree, and a leaflet about head injuries, and informing HV etc - this is normal procedure.

LadyOfScoffleTheEasterEggs · 12/04/2009 19:12

I would @ 10 days. I went a few times with DS1 when he fell off the bed.

MuffinBaker · 12/04/2009 19:15

A&E asap. Baby is so young.

Northernlurker · 12/04/2009 19:24

I would get it checked at that age. If there was a problem (and it's a very small chance that there would be) the signs won't be so obvious as they are in an older child so better to get him seen just in case.

Don't blame yourself though. These things happen. When I was a week old I managed to flip myself off the changing table and land on the floor, narrowly missing falling into the nappy bucket!! My parents took me to A&E - no harm done - except to their nerves!

PurlyQueen · 12/04/2009 19:37

Take him to A&E.

When my son was 8 weeks old, he fell onto the floor from a chair that my DH had put him on (God knows why).
We took him to A&E where he was given the once-over. We did get the third-degree and several follow-up telephone calls from the HV, but the medical staff are just doing their job.

MuffinBaker · 12/04/2009 19:43

At 10 days old you will be still getting to know your baby and might not know what is different behaviour. Please get him checked.

littleboyblue · 12/04/2009 19:48

When ds1 was 6 days old, he was in the pushchair, we went into town to do some shopping and I knocked the pushchair over, it fell backwards and he screamed so loud! I was in such a state, people were rushing over to me to check we were ok. I called NHS direct straight away and was told that he should be ok if he was feeding but that I should try to keep him awake for at least 2 hours to make sure he was ok, but take him to A&E if I felt I needed too. I fed him and he took it without any problems, I couldn't keep him awake, but I was able to wake him so I didn't take him, but if you feel you need to, then take him, they won't mind, after all you are doing what's best for your baby.

PoorLittleEgg · 12/04/2009 20:10

Thanks for replies, I called nhs direct. The nurse said pretty much what you were told littleboyblue. Keep an eye on him for vomiting, soft bits on skull etc etc, and to wake him every two hours to check he's wake-able. Feel reassured that he's probably OK esp since the red mark which he had after the bump has nearly gone.
So frightening.

Hi All, Thanks for your messages, I just wanted to say that baby poorlittlegg is absolutely fine and dandy.

Good. I found that when I did stuff like this, it helped me relax alot more when he started falling over and off of sofas and things. If he survived me knocking the pushchair over, and when he was 3 weeks and I dropped him......

Hello everyone! Just have a few quick questions for anyone who’s willing to help answer them :)

my 9mo fell off the bed 2 nights ago :( banged his face on the wooden floor beneath! He instantly screamed the house down, settled after 5-10 mins of cuddles, wasn’t sick, didn’t seem dazed, and followed me with good eye contact, however, I noticed his nose was bleeding a little bit, so instantly took him to a&e…

They gave him the all clear, but since then… I have noticed his nose sounds a little congested, could this just be some dried blood or snot? Last night he was a terror to settle, was fussy at bedtime, woke up 3/4 times all with the same fussy/restless attitude, mum picked some bogies out to try help, but his nose was leaking clear snot… wondering if any of these symptoms could be from the bang a couple of nights ago? Or with it being the cold season that he’s possibly picked something up… it’s so hard to tell 😣
