Chicken pox and newborn

My DD1 (3) has just come down with chicken pox. From the previous threads I've given her some piriton, some calpol, and luckily I had some Eurax cream too.

However my DD2 is 6 weeks old - should I get some advice? Of course they've been in contact with each other - is it too late to split them up (ie me go to mum's with DD2)? She was BF until 4 weeks and then switched to FF so I doubt DD2 will have much immunity. Is it dangerous for DD2? Another question - how long with DD1 have to stay at home? I can't believe we have to stay in on easter weekend when the weather's like this!!

Also - can I use calamine lotion as well as eurax?

my ds just started with pox this morning so feel your pain. His sister got it when he was just three weeks old. Doctor told me at time that as I had had it as a child chances were he had some immunity and it would be unusual for him to get it. He was only breastfed for couple of weeks too. It's spread through close contact and your de infectious until spots scab over. As long as she not kissing and cuddling him that should protect him.

and what if eurax?

That's good to hear - DD2 is rashy anyway - just examined her from head to toe and can't see any blisters.... but will keep them away from each other for a few days (easier said than done I suspect!)
Eurax is a cream that's used for general itchiness - heat rash etc - and can only be used for kids of 3 and over, and then only 3 times a day... but search for it in 'talk' it comes highly recommended!

chicken pox is infectious for 1-2 days before the rash appears until they crust over which is about 5-7 days from when they appear so your 6 week old will have already been exposed and it would be pointless trying to keep them apart. The incubation period is 10-21 days though so you wont find out if your baby has it for a wee while yet. I used calamine aqueous cream on dd and ds when they had CP - it is less drying than the lotion. Bicarbonate of soda in the bath is supposed to help too.
