Dh may have mumps.

Dd1 (21mo) has had the first MMR.

Dd2 is 17 days old - exclusively bf for 2 weeks.. I had mumps as a child.

So.........I know that you can still get mumps even with the MMR. What should I be looking out for as symptoms? (given that neither dd can really talk to me about symptoms)

Can I still send dd1 to nursery if she shows no symptoms. Should I be letting them know that dh may have mumps (he has been collecting and dropping off dd1 from nursery as I am currently relatively housebound recovering from c-section and a wound infection - yup - bundle of laughs in the meep household at the moment)

Should dh be keeping away from both girls?

When you say your DH might have mumps, has he seen a GP?

meep · 10/04/2009 15:04

GP's all closed here - he's spoken to NHS 24 - but has been in contact with someone who has had a confirmed diagnosis!

OK but does he have any symptoms... or is it just that you're worried about the possibility that he might have caught it?

Anyway if you had mumps as a child then your DD2 will have some protection from the maternal antibodies transferred during pregnancy. Your DD1 has been vaccinated and has a good chance of being protected, even though mumps component is the weakest component of the MMR.

You have done all you can to protect your children and there's no benefit to vaccinating again after an exposure (if it really is one).

he has one hamster cheek - swollen just under the ear and into his face - has felt off colour etc so it looks like it might be

Hmmm... yes it does sound a bit like mumps onset; being generally unwell and swelling starts on one side (and can become bilateral).

In the house you have probably all been exposed by now but I would say still send DD1 to school unless she shows signs. Your DH shouldn't really carry on dropping at nursery as he'll be infectious for several days after the swelling starts. He does need to see a GP asap for a full examination, plus it's a notifiable disease.

There's a large increase in mumps cases going on all over the UK at the moment, mainly in universities again.

TBH I think you should be more worried about your DP than the DCs...
Hope he recovers soon.

ilovetochat · 10/04/2009 21:38

me and dp both have swollen faces from ear upto eye and down to jawline at the moment. It is an ear infection part of a virus going round so he may be ok after all

meep · 11/04/2009 10:27

thanks everyone.
nhs24 said hewasn't to go to the GP as hewould just infect anyone who didn't have immunity!

keeping fingers crossed it is just an ear infection - though saying that don't really want the lo's to get that either!

Hi meep: Despite that NHS24 advice I still think your DH should go to the GP. It could probably be arranged that he visits at the time when there's a clinic of older generation patients, who would be almost certainly immune to mumps. He'll be infectious for about ten days after the onset of the swelling so will need a sick note.

@ilovetochat: sounds rather like mumps to me!

meep · 14/04/2009 11:27

Thanks Musukebba - he's been to the GP - they didn't seem worried about him infecting teh waiting room!!
