Says it all really. The last 3 nights she has had such bad coughing fits that she has thrown up. This has happened before when she last had a cold at Christmas. Do I call the Doctor again or use over the counter medicine, if so what can you reccommend.

Five, I was just coming on to write your OP! DD has been sick twice this evening due to coughing so much, I am not sure what to do either.

DumbledoresGirl · 06/04/2009 22:08

Is it a wet cough or a dry cough?

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 06/04/2009 22:08

What sort of coughs are they? Chesty? Dry? Tickley? Any fever?

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 06/04/2009 22:10

DS1 does this every time he gets a bad cold with cough. He is never sick other than at these times, its awful though

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/04/2009 22:10

Dry and hacking, she is fine during the day it is just at night and usually only once.

Anything you want to add Ewe (or are you already sitting outside my backdoor with the rest of the 550 sheep waiting to lamb )

How old is she? Any fever?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/04/2009 22:12

3 and no fever, she had one last week had a touch of tonsilitis and had a short course of antibiotics but then this started.

We have the dry, hacking fine during the day cough too.

I just saw your pics, do you live on a sheep farm!? Lambing must be ever so exciting.

DumbledoresGirl · 06/04/2009 22:14

A dry cough can be safely suppressed with something like honey and lemon (or any cough supressant medicine). Have you tried any?

Another idea you could try is dampening the atmosphere with a bowl of water placed near a heater.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 06/04/2009 22:17

I'd let it run it's course. Off to the GP if you are concerned or if they are unable to sleep/vomiting alot/off food/unwell with a headache and chesty cough.

Call NHS direct if you are concerned. They are better then mumsnet. I agree with a bowl of water and honey and lemon. You can try a damp cloth on a radiator, it does the same as a bowl of water but dries out faster.

Please do contact NHS direct if you are concerned. You know your children better then me.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/04/2009 22:18

She had some Benilyn tonight, not sure if that is a cough supressant so will go to chemists tomorrow. DH just putting the heater on with a bowl of water. Thank you for your help.

Ewe sort of, we live on an estate and while we have the farmhouse the land and yard are used by the estate farm for the sheep

Benelyn for kids is an antihistamine (same as in Medised, iirc) and supposedly dries up secretions - should her her sleep through the cough reflex to some extent, too. And agree with humidifier/damp towel on heater strategy - best thing ime.

As for coughs....its usually dd2, but last week I had such a hacking cough after a virus that I threw up myself, just from coughing (not to mention wet myself a bit several times too ). Sympathies to your poor dd, hope it gets better soon!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/04/2009 22:30

Thanks you.

Do call them if you are worried. I hope they are both feeling better soon.
