Hand, foot and mouth - any experiences/advice?

DS has just got over chicken pox and has now been sent home from nursery with suspected hand, foot and mouth [sob] - I did notice little spots on his wrists and ankles this morning but he gets cracked skin around those areas because of his eczema so thought nothing of it.

I can't get a doctors appt until tomorrow afternoon, so is there anything I should be doing in the meantime? He's got a mild temperature so have given Calpol - he's very lethargic with is not like him at all - lots of snuggling in front of CBeebies coming up I think.

Is it OK to put sudocrem on the blisters? (as they are in the same place as his normal dry cracked skin)

it's really common norky. all mine have had it lol. i didn't put anything on the blisters, but kept topped up with calpol until the temp disappeared. it can be a bit sore to eat if there are spots in the mouth, so ice cream is handy lol.

maybe if you ring nhsdirect and ask if you can use your normal cream on the rash it would settle your mind.

our school and nursery only exclude for the temp period btw, and if they are miserable .

so no - nothing much to do lol. cbeebies and calpol sounds perfect.

Both my dds had it a few weeks ago. One didn't feel ill at all but dd2 was very irritated by the spots.

Sudocrem may work. I tried Calamine lotion, caster oil cream and a antiseptic cream(which seemed to work the best).

Hope that helps and your ds gets over it soon.

Thanks for the replies! I have plenty of calamine left from the pox period so will give that a go.

Glad to hear your DCs got over it quickly!

My DS was 9 months old when he got it - the mouth blisters were obviously bothering him so I covered his dummy in teething gel which seemed to give him some relief - it does pass quite quickly though
