Grommit removal- what to expect?

DS had grommits fitted last May and they are still in situ and GP has referred him back to ENT to have them removed.

Anybody has had this done?

I've never heard of them being removed. My DD1 had them fitted when she was 5yrs old. She still has one in situ. As far as our GP is concerned and that of the ENT Dept they would prefer that they fall out on their own accord because that way we know her ears/tubes have grown etc. She is now just over 10yrs old. Where the one grommit has fallen out she has now re-developed glue ear so we're having to look at having new ones fitted. I'd have thought it'd be wiser to leave them in cos they're obviously still fitted and he's not grown enough for them to fall out?

I have never heard of them being taken out

dd1 has has two sets put in

whispywhisp · 06/04/2009 08:50

I would really question WHY they want to remove them cos surely if they've only been in not even 12mths he could well have to have a new set fitted again at a later date? The longer they're in the better imo.

one grommit from dd took 2 years to come out - but that is within the stats, and no one suggested removing it.

One of my DS's grommits has fallen out, the other is on the way out but stuck sideways (or sommat!) so he will be having it removed in a couple of weeks.

As far as I know, the Ear, nose and Throat doctor is just seeing us in his surgery - I really hope it's not general anaesthetic to get it out!

whispywhisp · 06/04/2009 11:56

The grommit that's still in my DD1's ear is also stuck sideways but the GP doesn't feel it needs removing. Wish they would tho cos it does hurt her sometimes.

HaventSleptForAYear · 06/04/2009 12:40

I was told it needed removing because they can't see into his ear properly to check for infection.

As he's prone to ear infections they need to be able to check it.

whispywhisp · 06/04/2009 13:23

Exactly the same here HSFAY but our GPs don't seem too bothered about it - she's had two ear infections in the last month and has had two courses of penicillen - but because they can't see into the ear drum because of the position of the grommit and with the other grommit-free ear now being glue ear they can't see into either ear yet they don't think its a problem. Our GPs have told us to give it until the end of this month and to go back and have another look and then they will decide whether or not to refer us to ENT - would help if the GPs could actually agree because every time we go in they have differing opinions. We thought about going down the private route with her again - her grommits were done privately and cost us almost £2k - but we don't have that sort of money now and really have got to try the NHS route. Just wish it weren't quite so drawn out and slow tho.

Sorry for the late replying and thank you for all the replies ,. The consultant said when DS was discharged from ENT that the grommits should come out within 12 months otherwise they could leave a permananent hole in the eardrum.

First GP said not to worry but as DS´s school has a hearing unit attached I asked the teachers there what they thought and they said try and get referred back as they believed they should be removed.. 2nd GP did make the referral so will wait and see what the ENT dep will say.

Whispywhisp / I said the same re refitting the grommits but they told me the tubes should have developed enough now and glue ear is unlikely )but possible.

WIll keep you all posted but would be great to hear from others re their experiences

Just got a letter from the GP and she spoke to the ENT specialist who said they can safely stay in for 3 years

Just back from the ENT ourselves.

DS's left gromit is still in on its way out but stuck in a scab (or something).

Doctor didn't want to pull it out because it would hurt, he has checked the holes have closed up on both sides and his hearing.

He says it will work its way out on its own but now we can go swimming!
