Hi
My dd is nearly 8, and has come downstairs complaining that her front bottom is sore and itchy, she is really upset and crying. She says it is 'around the bit the wee comes out'.
She has had it a few times before and i took her to the doctors lasst time but she was no help.
Have given Calpol and she has put Sudocrem on, and had a drink of water.
SWhat on earth is it, and should we be worried, what more can i be doing.
It doesnt look too red.
Any advice gratefully recieved.

well, it sounds like a UTI
or thrush maybe?>

foxinsocks · 04/04/2009 22:01

worms?

artichokes · 04/04/2009 22:02

Is it thrush? I used to get thrush as a small child and still remember the discomfort. I used to call it "sore pee" so it must have been in a similar area to your DD. Really horrible for her .

tummytickler · 04/04/2009 22:02

How would it be worms?
Would that not cause itching out the back?
what other signs would there be?

Thrush? Does she like bubbles in her bath? My dd loved using stuff from Lush until we worked out that the buble bars were what was irritating her.
And pleeease don't call in front bottom

tummytickler · 04/04/2009 22:03

[Ignorant emoticon here]. What should i do for thrush, never had it myself so i am not sure. Artichokes - what helped you as a child?

Dont call it fornt bottom in real life - dont worry! she calls it her bum-bum!!! (her choice - not mine!)

they crawl all over worms. Often a sign in girls is an itchy vulva as the worms irritate the skin wherever they go.

I'd take her to the GP on Monday and go to a diff GP and get them to have a look.

My dd (8) gets this a lot. But she has sensitive skin there and tends to get an irritated vulva (think it is called vulvitis but can't remember).

We have to have

  • no bubble bath or soap or perfumed products
  • always wear cotton knickers
  • let it breathe a bit now and then
  • avoid tight fitting clothing while she is itchy (so tights, jeans etc.)

but check for worms first just in case

artichokes · 04/04/2009 22:09

There are creams the doctor can prescribe for thrush. Putting live yoghurt down there is also very helpful and soothing. It sounds odd but even doctors will tell you it works. As it is sunday tomorrow and you won't get to a GP it might be worth a try.

tummytickler · 04/04/2009 22:26

She ssays it makes her want to wee lots, but just little wees? Does that ring any bells?

That sounds like cystitis rather than thrush. If its cystitis get her to drink loads of water and cranberry juice. You can also get sachets from the chemist. If it persists she should see the GP and get antibiotics as it can spread to the kidneys.

tummytickler · 04/04/2009 22:33

Great - will do! She loves Cranberry juice so that is good. Thanks for the help everyone. Will take to GP on Monday, give her water and Cranberry juice, and no bubbles or soap in tomorrows bath (poor thing).

Hi tummytickler I have just read your message from April and so your daughter is prob as right as rain now. But for what it's worth, I agree 100% with foxinsocks that she's had threadworm. Don't worry, it's really common but it does sound disgusting the first time you encounter it. The good news is that it is really easy to treat with a tablet called Ovex from your pharmacist over the counter. Even though she had symptoms back in April, she's bound to get it again especially if she is a finger sucker. If she gets the itching, frequent peeing and is unable to get back to sleep, you can be pretty sure that she has a case of thread worm. My daughter is a finger sucker and so I have had the exact same problem. Hope you get this message and that it is helpful.

how can u tell its worms? as my dd's is the same and it was put down to thrush by the docs- she was given cream. She does have white around her vulva at times and is often red due to scratching it in her sleep when shes hot. Since she started to wipe herself properly after she been on the toilet (She is 5 now) and dont have bubble baths, it seems to be getting better. I put the cream on her every other day incase the itchness kicks off again.

biglips · 25/11/2009 19:10

my dd called her bottom - bum and her private parts - bum bum

biglips · 25/11/2009 19:11

and she also stopped wearing knickers in bed too
