Any ideas what is wrong with him?

Ds2 (4) has been very tired, hot, whimpering since yesterday evening. He says his head hurts. I've given him calpol and just waiting to see if that helps but I'm not sure if i should call a doctor out to see him. I can't see any rashes or anything really obvious. He was sick this morning but only once and not huge amount.

Would n't see gp let alone call one out for such inspecific and short term symptoms. Probably viral or could he be over tired (end of term ?) Keep on the calpol/nurfoen and offer clear fluids. If he is still liek this on Monday then call gp or if any sudden changes.

smudgethepuppydog · 03/04/2009 12:54

If calpol isn't helping with the pain and temp then I'd get him seen. GPs would rather see and reassure than deal with menegitis too late.

go and see the doc rather than call one out
good luck

How high is his temperature? If above 38 or so I would definitely ring GP surgery.

Actually in your situation I probably would ring the surgery, and explain the symptoms, ask if you can discuss with a GP/practice nurse and let them give you telephone advice.

Unless you or he have a disability or some other practical reason that you can't travel e.g. surgery 20 miles away by bus etc then there is no good reason to call the doctor out to see him.

If he deteriorates then definitely get proper medical advice (not from us on here)

Thank you. I will just keep him on the calpol and see how he goes.

No the reason I was thinking of calling doctor out is I don't drive and it's a good half hour walk to my doctors surgery which is normally not an issue but he is barely moving from the sofa because he's so tired. But I will wait and see if the calpol helps.

Hope he's improving

Our surgery do phone consultations - ideal for this type of situation. Does yours do that?

annemarie30 · 03/04/2009 13:04

The surgery will do over the phone advice if needed.

Sorry I know I am probably just over reacting

Mothers are allowed to over react with their own children.

Hope the calpol does it's magic.

sounds like what my nephew had the other day- a migraine believe it or not! see here or here Apparently very common

annemarie30 · 03/04/2009 16:36

Plusone thank you, I did wonder about migraine. I wasn't sure if a child his age could get them. If it continues I'll get him seen by the gp. He seems slightly better now.

Hi, three weeks ago, my little one started off with feeling unwell, tired and aching, she was sick once. The next day a rough rash developed, she ended up with Scarlet Fever. Apparently it has been making the rounds. Is more common in children aged 4 - 10 yrs. Just keep an eye on him and phone NHS direct if more symptoms develop.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 03/04/2009 16:50

What do you mean when you say he's whimpering? Is he abnormally sleepy? Aversion to bright lights? How's his neck? Is he able to to bend it and put his chin on his chest?

annemarie30 · 04/04/2009 09:15

misschatterbox - I was worried it might be scarlet fever because there have been cases of it at his nursery. He actually seems much better today. He's running around being his usual cheeky self. He told his brother that he went to sleep and his headache went away.

FluffyBunny, he was whimpering in his sleep as well as crying when he was awake. I'm not sure but his symptoms were very similar to when I have migraine so it might have been that.

Thank you so much for all the advice. Just glad he's feeling better
