Hi, my little girls (6 months) has viral conjunctivitis and the doc won't prescribe drops. She's not too bad, just a tiny bit gunky in the eyes for 4 days now, but i can't take her to nursery because of it. Its my first week back at work so i would really appreciate any tips.
I am bathing them in cooled boiled water with fresh bits of coton wool each time.
Thanks, K

If it's viral drops won't do any good, which is why GP won't give them.

is there anything else that might help though? other than what i'm already doing?

Nope.

Its a total PITA conjunctivitis.

Are you breastfeeding? Breastmilk rubbed on the eye works a treat.

unfortunately not.... thanks tho!

Is it because of nursery policy?
In DDs nursery they'll let them come in with conjunctivitis once they have the drops.

It drives DH mad. He's a GP in the village of the nursery and all the best practice and evidence says that most conjunctivitis is viral and drops will make No difference - however all the parents want them as it means their LOs can go back to nursery.

DH even had a chat with the manager to try to get them to change their policy but No joy.

Anyway I'll get down from DHs soapbox now!

blowninonabreeze · 02/04/2009 13:25

PS. You can buy them over the counter. They aren't allowed to sell them for children, only adults, but if you were to say you were buying them for your DH?...... (whistles innocently)

Make a solution of cooled boiled water and bicarb of soda, keep in the fridge, decant when you need to bathe the eyes, use fresh cotton wool for each eye.
Also go to a health food shop and get some homoepathic remedy called eyebright (Euphrasia), if they have it in drops, great, get them and bathe eyes with it. If they only have the pillules, get the lowest dose and crush them between 2 spoons and get them in bubs mouth.
Both my boys have had this, ds1 was treated with drops, and it went in a couple of days and ds2 used the pillules and it was gone in 3 days.
The pillules are useful to have in the cupboard, as now ehn i sopt the gunk coming on anyone, its one pill and its gone!

yep its nursery policy that they should have drops, but also that they can't come back until the gunk is gone. We have told them that local GP policy is now not to give drops, which i also agree with as it makes perfect sense.

I guess i'll just wait it out and hope my boss doesn't lose patience with me! i suppose this is what nursery is all about at the start...
