I don't agree with GP about Folliculitis, or is she right?

DS2 has chicken pox, which is almost finished. However 2 days ago I noticed a huge rash on his torso, back/ tummy, butt and legs- Red and like a cheese grater at touch. I went to GP yesterday who gave him a 2 second look and said it's Folliculitis (inflammation of one or more hair follicles )and gave AB cream. My son is 2. Folliculitis? I don't believe it. From neck to knees he has thousand of tiny spots, one thousand hair follicles infected? But none on face, feet, arms, where is is more likely to touch himself? How could he have reached the center of his back with dirty (from touching chicken pox spots) hands? Any experience? Suggestion? Please,I want to ring back.

what makes you think he would have had to touch with chicken pox hands for it to happen?

Trinityrhino · 01/04/2009 09:06

any help

scroll down

I'm beggining to agree that maybe the gp isn't right

Thanks for the link. I gave a look at the pictures. Pimples come in all shape, size and colours. One picture looked like DS, most don't, but then it may be a further stage.
It was the GP who said the infection was from touching a CP spot on the face and then spreading it to other body parts. DS has no yellowish pimple, or bright red, shiny, ...
Skin is so difficult...

I have keratosis. Quite commen in kids. Doctors usually misdoagnose as folliculitis. Not dangerous just ugly. Most kids grow out of it (unless you are me and it gets worse)

Thank you LouisnothappyJan and Stercus! My dh has this on his arms and I always wondered what it was. Now I know.

I know mine has gotten worse since coming to the UK. Sun helps a lot. I also take vitamin A tablets daily and that has helped a lot. Also a GP said that some antihistamines like Zirtek can help. Thats my next thing to try. But exfoliate exfoliate exfoliate.
Sea salt, olive oil and caster oil is fabulous for it too.

Its genetic is all i know.. really.

DSD's mum has it.

It gets better the older you get in most cases but it never goes away apparently.

Can i ask what happened in the end. My daughter has just got chickenpox but has got spots everywhere! They followed the typical chikenpox fashion starting in the nappy area, top of torso then spread around and down whole trunk. Now neck and face. Doctor just seen her and says it is chicken pox and folliculitus. She's been given oral antibiotics.
Thanks for any advise on this.

gordonpym · 29/04/2011 20:59

10 days and all the spots were gone. We were given an oral AB.
Gp said (2 years ago, can't really remember exact words), that is quite common to have chicken pox and another illness at the same time, that CP is actually quite nasty. Hope it helps!
