Help! Just found toddler eating salt... what should we do?

I have just found my DD aged 2 and 9 months standing on the kitchen steps eating cooking salt, which she had found on the counter.

No idea how much she's eaten - she says not much.

Should I be worried? Or if she's eaten too much will it just make her sick?

We have given her plenty of water.

Any advice welcome.

Phone NHS direct

Surely wouldn't have eaten too much as tastes too horrid and strong?? Maybe ask her if she wants any more, if she says yes then maybe she does like it so could've eaten more??
I would just give plenty of water and watch as anything in enough of a quantity can poison, but if just a little she'll probably be fine.

sorry, I posted too soon.

She probably is fine if it isn't muc but I would phone to be on the safe side

I'm not a medical professional though so maybe as CW and TF say??

What did you do?

EmmalinaC · 30/03/2009 21:25

We have a doctor next door so I went and asked him. We don't know him well so I wasn't sure whether it was worth disturbing him so thanks for your advice. He said it's virtually impossible to overdose on salt - it makes you sick before it can do you harm. He said to keep an eye on her, which is what we're doing.

Final update - it did indeed make her sick. From midnight to 3am. So we called NHS direct who said not to worry, she'll be fine in the morning. And she is. Thanks everyone.

Bless her, poor thing. Glad she is OK - hopefully she will never do that again.
