"Hair trigger" vomiting response in 9 y.o. ds. Anyone know how to deal with this ?

Ds has a tendancy to find 'nasty things' make him gag, & sometimes actually vomit.
Nasty things might include bits of wet leaves, fluff, feathers (esp wet).

He's been sent home from school this afternoon, cos he's been sick. He seems fighting fit to me, and he's just told me that another boy was chewing leaves off a bush in the playground, which is what made him sick.

In earlier years he's thrown up over tea at the childminders cos another child had a bit of leaf stuck in her hair.

Has anyone got any experience of this? What can we do.

DS1 is the same.

He was once sent home from school because another child burped and it made him sick.

He used to be sick while doing a poo quite regularly becuase he couldn't stand the smell.

I'm not sure what you can do about it.Is he very sensitive about other things too?

The feel of a balloon between his lips makes him heave, I'll try to think of others.

He won't wear a watch cos the feel of it on his wrist annoys him (I don't even notice I'm wearing mine!), and we sometimes get problems with seams in his socks

AHHHHH! Seams in socks! - I know that one all to well

It could be a sensory processing thing -he does sound very sensitive. There seem to be lots of books written by Americans on how to deal with a child with sensory difficulites. In the UK we seems to be oblivious to the fact that some people are more sensitive than others.

Oh, at least we're not alone then.

I wonder if anyone else has dealt with this ? Please????

noddyholder · 30/03/2009 15:27

My sons friend is harassed madly by the seams on his socks and cannot bear them to be uneven or anything .....he has an acute sense of smell too and touch he positively reacted lie he'd been burnt with a warm tumble dried towel.

Blimey,how unusual!

My dd has similar prob. Her gag reflex is so sensitive. She even went through a phase of vomiting if the collar on her poloshirt was buttoned up too far. She has sensory processing order, so maybe worth a look at that,
