My 2 and a half year old had a full head of nits - so so horrid! Anyway, we treated them twice with the recommended shampoo from the chemist and used the nit comb provided. Because her hair is so fine the nit comb slid straight through and I am not sure how successful it was getting ALL the eggs off her head.

It has been a whole week since and I can still see the white eggs on her hair - are they dead? or has she still got nits?

Any advice here would be greatly received.

Poor you! Keep combing - if you can still see the eggs they need to go imo. My dd has long straight hair and it took months to get rif of them at one point. Every tioehr day combing with a nitty gritty comb and comditioner with lavender and tea tree oil. Worked eventually - dd was bribed with choice of a film and a chocolate tea cake!

Good luck

Thank you - I thought you treated them once and would leave.. but that just isn't the case is it?

Not in my experience. Sorry - they really are the bane of my life when they happen as it takes a good hour to comb her hair!

advice here

drlove8 · 29/03/2009 21:42

get some neem oil... makes the nits slide out when using a nitty gritty comb, shampoo out after.

really is a case of conditioner or oil, and nitty gritty.. slide any remaining eggs off the hair with fingers.
ever 2/3 days.. and keep doing it.

I think that the white eggs are empty egg cases of nits that have hatched. Unhatched eggs are browner in colour. My advice would be to buy a cheap bottle of condiioner and invest in a nitty gritty...far superior to a standard nit comb imo. I could never get rid of eggs from dd's hair with a standard comb but a nitty gritty worked a treat.

The cheaper the conditioner the better - as the more you use the easier it is to comb. I add a few drops of oils to it too.

Oh and, keep an eye out for them yourselves - my dd passsed them onto me at least once... So now when one gets them, we all comb!!

I used conditioner on my niece the other day and left it on her hair for 5 minutes before dragging the nit comb through her hair, the nits/lice got caught up in all the conditioner

whingeomatic · 29/03/2009 22:59

another vote for the nitty gritty comb & gallons of cheap conditioner - you can almost feel the little buggers being dragged out!!

I was about to suggest the nitty gritty comb, but I see that others have already done so. It's great. You have to comb regularly but with lots of conditioner it's not a problem.
