Growing out of croup? Still struggling with night-time cough though. Long - sorry

Any follower of croup threads will probably recognise my name...

DS1 has had various attacks of croup but now, aged 5.4, I hoped he'd be growing out of it.

Our last A+E visit was 6 weeks ago. Usual middle of the night trip - nebuliser, streoids, home, back to school after a couple of days.

However a couple of weeks later he started coughing again. We were given 2 inhalers. He's been having the brown preventer twice a day and the blue one originally just when he had a coughing spasm/attack but the past couple of weeks he's been having it morning and night as I'm desperate to stop this coughing / lack of sleep / missing school cycle. (It's been over a month now)

Anyway, last night was our worst in ages. He had 2 spasms of 3-hour non stop coughing. I was convinced he was about to get an attack of croup and that we were going to end up at A+E again - but he didn't. Do you think this sounds like mild croup? Perhaps the preventer is helping? Perhaps he's growing out of it?

My frustration is that if he had had full blown croup then he could have the steroids and would be on the mend by now. (I'm not making light of this by the way, having once been admitted for 2 nights I know from experience how scary croup can be). But this constant night-time coughing seems never-ending and I'm so exhausted I'm reaching the end of my tether.

He's not ill enough for steroids but the inhalers don't seem to be working. Is there anything in between that could help him???

I've spoken to various GPs who keep telling me there is no black and white solution. DS's chest was last checked on Monday and it was clear.

Sorry this is long. Any help would be gratefully received.
