DD is 5 months old and recently I have noticed that her pupils are different sizes.

Does anyone have an ideas about this? Anyone elses dcs have this?

I might take her to the Docs next week but wondered if anyone could put my mind at rest, or not??

If you have a decent HV, give them a call.

Can't offer any other decent advice, but didn't want to leave your thread unanswered.

My DS has this. He was referred to the ophthalmology dept at the hospital when he was a baby and they checked his eyesight and concluded that there nothing wrong. He's now nearly 5 and just had another eye test, which didn't show anything up either. "Just one of those things", they said.

Get it checked out though, if you're worried.

Taken for a medical website.

"Occasionally, a baby is born with different sized pupils and there is no underlying disorder. If other family members also have this condition, then pupil size is possibly genetic and is nothing to worry about.

At times, for unknown reasons, pupils may differ in size. If there are no other symptoms and if the pupils return to normal, then the temporary condition is nothing to worry about.

Unequal pupil sizes that develop later in life and persist are often a sign of a brain, blood vessel, or nerve disease."

It sounds like you have nothing to worry about but for peace of mind maybe you could have it checked out by gp/ophthalmologist?

Go to the GP sooner rather than later. Pupils are supposed to be generally equal. There are some unusual conditions which cause this - but it can also be perfectly normal!

Get it checked out.

DS has this. We noticed at 4m. And I warn you that our HV, GP and osteopath didn't have a clue (the osteo was the only one to realise that it could be a problem, but she couldn't do much on her own). In his case, one pupil does not dilate as much as the other (most major problems are when one pupil is more dilated than the other).

So the result is I have no idea whether anything is wrong with him. He is fine and happy (I think) but nobody has really checked his eyes except for saying 'ooh yes - you're right: he does have one pupil bigger than the other...' (He is 18m now, btw.)

I'd be interested in hearing whether you have a more knowledgeable GP than us and what he/she says.

i have this and so does dd. In our case it is a freak genetic thing, but i have had doctors look into my eye in panic whilst questioning me about unprotected sex and severe car crashes. Turns out it could be brain damage (from high impact car crash for example) or cranial syphilis .

I think in the most instances it is a truly benign thing (and i have no idea where I got the gene from as both my parents have "normal" pupils) but occasionally it can be a sign of something else, so pop to the gp and see what he says.
