Can antiobiotics in breast milk upset baby's tummy?

I am on Flucloxacillin for mastitis and was told to keep feeding. However, 14 week old DD seems to have very painful wind and diarrhoea and is very unsettled. Is this the ABs or should I take her to the doctor?

I was on flucloxacillin for mastitis over christmas. The gp swore that not enough gets through the breastmilk to upset a babies tum but my ds2 (2 1/2 months at the time) had a horrendous tummy and awful poo which cleared up exactly 2 weeks after i finished the course (and they say it takes two weeks for drugs/food allergens to leave the system) and there is no doubt in my mind that it was the antibiotics.

He has just finished a course of a different antibiotic for a chest infection ( i hate my baby having to have all of these antibiotics) and he has the most awful diarrhoea again (which has been cultured but nothing grew).

Obviously your dd is a very young baby so i would possibly get her checked if you are worried just to be sure nothing else is going on (there seem to be a few bugs going around [hiding under the covers anxious emetophobe emoticon]

Poor you, hope you feel better soon. Mastitis is grisly.

DS seemed to be affected when I was on ABs (which I was a lot when he was little). (He got thrush and had awful digestive problems.) I gave him probiotics (acidophilus) in ebm (with a spoon) which seemed to help a lot.

Hope you feel better soon.

Very small amounts of flucox pass into breastmilk, so it is possible that it is an antibiotic effect, but I wouldn't let this prevent you from taking LO to GP anyway if you are concerned.

Thank you both. In a way I am glad to know it's probably the antibiotics as at least that means she hasn't got a bug. I actually have some acidophilus but was going to take it myself rather than give it to DD2. If I give it to her how much should I give and how often?

Sorry Ju, didn't mean to ignore you, cross posted. I am pretty sure it's the ABs as she has no fever or anything so for now I will try and avoid the third visit to the doctors in less than a week...
